In 2016, Open Door Group (www.opendoorgroup.org) and Tradeworks Training Society (www.tradeworks.bc.ca) formed a strategic partnership to deliver skills training and employment services in Vancouver’s downtown eastside.  The partnership between the two non-profit organizations has been founded on shared values for person-centered services and a fundamental belief in all individuals’ ability to succeed.


Open Door Group now delivers the Women in Trades Program and the Kickstart Your Career in Carpentry Program funded through the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. Both programs take place at the Tradeworks facility located in Vancouver’s eastside and include a mix of soft skills and training in a wood shop.


Job Summary


Reporting to the Associate Program Director, the Employment Facilitator assists unemployed, or underemployed, individuals to obtain employment opportunities by performing duties such as assisting clients to identify suitable job options, coaching clients to develop skills to increase employment readiness, locating prospective employers and facilitate sustainable job placements.


Key Responsibilities:


  1. Provide coaching in employment-related areas such as work skills, job search skills, resume preparation, and interview skills and; identifying and arranging education in accordance with employment aspirations.


  1. Assist in job search efforts by performing duties such as facilitating a variety of job readiness and job search workshops, assisting in the preparation of resumes and cover letters, and providing support and navigation to community resources.


  1. Actively build relationships and engage with employers to arrange work experience and job opportunities for clients through activities such as such as making cold calls, networking, and developing partnerships.


  1. Follow up with employers and clients to support successful work experience and employment placements


  1. Recruit prospective program clients through activities such as community presentations, hosting meetings, and responding to inquiries.


  1. Evaluate client eligibility for programs and services and provide information regarding available resources, referrals to other programs and services as required, and where appropriate, monitors progress in those programs.


  1. Complete and maintain related records and documentation such as reports on clients' skill levels and progress towards goals and objectives. Reports back to APD regarding metrics and program progress.


  1. Other related duties as assigned.



Education, Training, and Experience

  • Two year diploma in Community, Employment or Social Services related program
  • Recent, related experience of three years
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work
  • Unrestricted driver’s license and use of motor vehicle


Skills and Abilities

  • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing
  • Comfortable speaking to a broad range of stakeholders and to groups
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Evidenced ability to make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgement
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BC labour market
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and motivational skills
  • Advanced MS Office skills
