Location: Hamilton Salary: $32,760 to $36,400 per annum

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to the spiritual development of children/youth and young families within the church and community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling appropriate attitudes and behaviors.

Coordinate, maintain, and assist in the evaluation of Salvation Army programs/ministries relevant to the children/youth of the church and community at large including worship, fellowship, discipleship, and regular special events.

Review current programs and make recommendations for changes where needed.

Work in cooperation and consultation with the church’s mission board, administrative staff and pastoral care givers.

Plan and implement fellowship events for children, youth and young families with the goal of creating fun, fellowship and outreach.

Demonstrate keen interest in connecting young families to our church through programs and relationship building.

Maintain rolls and stats relevant to children and youth ministries and their leaders (e.g. Junior Soldiers Roll, Cradle Roll, Sunday School Roll, police checks, completion of the statement of applicant for work with children and youth, on-line abuse prevention training, etc.)

Maintain program storage areas (e.g., toy cleaning, updating, safety, organizing, etc.)

Plan, supervise and participate in regular special corps events, primarily focused on children, youth and their families. (e.g. Camps, Rally Day, Vacation Bible School, etc.)

Support and participate in Divisional children and youth events.

Demonstrate keen pastoral interest in and involvement with children, youth, and their families.

May provide input into the departmental budget and be required to monitor the financial performance accordingly.

Prepare and deliver children and youth worship services and devotionals for both the senior corps and for youth events on a regular basis.

Organize and coordinate fundraising initiatives as required.

Interact with community partners as necessary to seek resources and services for youth. 

Perform other position related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a Community College, e.g. Diploma in Biblical Studies, a degree in Biblical Studies or equivalent education would be an asset

Minimum of two (2) years prior related experience working with and providing programs for children and/or youth is preferred.

Participation in The Salvation Army Mountain Citadel as an active member is expected

Demonstrated ability to work with and relate to young people and parents

Understand, support and be able to communicate and model the Mission, Values, Doctrines and policies of The Salvation Army in Canada

Current Safe Food Handling Certificate, or willing to obtain and maintain current certificate

Current CPR/First Aid certification, or willing to obtain and maintain current certification

Strong team player, leadership skills are required

Understanding of the children and youth  and associated needs

Understand, support, and be able to communicate and model the Mission, Values, Doctrines and policies of The Salvation Army in Canada

Proficiency with social media

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint

Ability to play a musical instrument is an asset

Self-motivated and disciplined

Effective time management and strong organizational and interpersonal skills

Adaptable, behave ethically and build relationships

Conflict management and resolution skills

Ability to teach and lead various activities.

Ability to lift/move more than 20 lbs.

Communicate effectively, strong oral and written communication skills

Creativity/Innovation: Develop new and unique ways to improve programs and to create new opportunities.

Foster Teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals and to resolve problems.

Lead: Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.

Organize: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities

Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.

Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle and insurance is required; an original copy of a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Support for an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada

 

This is a permanent full time position based on 35 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required and will vary according to the needs of the children and youth ministries, including weekend and evening work. Travel is required.

 

Hours of work: The supervisor will set the hours of work and schedule, which will include weekend and evening work.  Includes a ½-hour unpaid meal break where applicable.
