Position: Clinical Therapist, Youth and Family Therapy program


Job Summary: Integral to Phoenix’s continuum of care, the Phoenix Youth and Family Therapy program offers clinical therapy to youth between the ages of 11 and 24, and their families.  The Clinical Therapists work with youth and families struggling with a range of challenges, including difficult family relationships, grief and loss, peer conflict and bullying, challenges at school, coping with emotions, low self-esteem, histories of abuse, and discrimination and poverty.  This position works collaboratively with all of Phoenix’s service-delivery programs and in conjunction with Halifax’s junior and senior high schools and relevant community resources.


Status: This is a full-time permanent position beginning on Tuesday November 14, 2017.


Wage/Compensation: A competitive salary, comprehensive group medical insurance plan, Employee and Family Assistance Program, RRSP contribution, three weeks vacation in the first year and four weeks in the second, generous sick leave, a generous paid holiday schedule, in-house trainings and professional development opportunities.


Hours of Work: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., 40 hours per week, including occasional evening work.


Location: Young Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia


Screening Requirements: This position is subject to a criminal record check, a child abuse register check and proof of education.



  • Provide clinical therapy for youth and their families.
  • Provide consultation to parents, school staff, Phoenix staff and community partners.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops for Phoenix staff and community partners.
  • Supervise Master of Social Work students and registered social work candidates.
  • Review and revise the program’s clinical policies and procedures as required.
  • Liaise and advocate with other agencies on behalf of youth and Phoenix, and participate in community committees, projects or activities.
  • Utilize Phoenix database for client records management, program development and evaluation purposes.
  • Commitment to the development of Phoenix Youth Programs and participate in internal activities, committees and projects.


  • Master of Social Work degree or equivalent.
  • Current Registered Social Worker or candidacy status, or current registration with the appropriate professional governing body.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a clinical therapist.
  • Experience providing therapy to youth and families.
  • Demonstrated skill using an anti-oppressive, harm reduction and narrative practice, and a social justice perspective.
  • Demonstrated critical reflection skills in relation to social and political issues that impact youth and their families.
  • Familiarity with using various therapy models, such as Narrative, CBT, DBT, ACT, Feminist, and Trauma-informed practices.
  • A high level of understanding of adolescent development and adolescent mental health.
  • Experience supervising MSW students an asset.
  • Standard First Aid or a commitment to secure these certifications within six months of being hired.
