Job Summary:   The Academic Coach will provide high-school aged students, individually and in group format, with focussed academic coaching and tutoring support in and out of high school environments and in collaboration with Phoenix staff.  The ability to engage youth in math and literacy upgrading to directly support graduation requirements for their high school programming will be a primary focus of the role. 


Additionally, consultation and liaison with the youth’s respective school and teacher will help to support each student’s learning plan and create stronger connections between the student and their school.  The academic coach will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including other Phoenix program personnel and Citadel High School personnel will participate in other enrichment and recreational activities during out-of-school hours as required.


Hours of Work:  20 hours/week, Tuesday-Thursday, varied daytime hours including two evenings per week.

 Citadel High School, 1855 Trollope Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia


Reports to: Coordinator, Phoenix Learning and Employment Centre (PLEC)


Screening Requirements: This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.



  • Provide high-school aged youth with academic coaching and tutoring support through individual and group sessions.
  • Engage youth in math and literacy upgrading to directly support graduation requirements for their high school programming.
  • Facilitate sessions in collaboration with Citadel High School and Phoenix staff to support the youth’s academic plan and explore future educational and career goals.
  • Connect with school personnel from various high schools to access supports that will build connections to the youth’s school community.
  • Provide referral and school liaison services, including but not limited to Citadel High School, to address youth’s academic needs, and advocate with school staff on the youth’s behalf if required.



  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent.
  • Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).
  • Minimum two (2) years teaching experience, preferable with high school aged youth.
  • First Aid training and Suicide intervention training would be an asset.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and using the Internet.
