The Children/Youth Director will provide vision, direction and oversight to the KIOS (Kids In Owen Sound) program and subsequent program initiatives geared to reaching, discipling and mentoring children ages 6 to 12 and youth ages 13-18. They will be responsible to create, implement and deliver an extensive mentoring and leadership development program through the following responsibilities.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide a Biblically-focused, creative and dynamic leadership to all facets of the KIOS program, collaborating with a dedicated team of volunteers in program development and delivery.

Ensure the consistent and on-going outreach focus to KIOS families through regular follow up, home visits, the Bus ministry, special events, and activities.

Implement a mentoring, discipleship and leadership development strategy for overaged KIOS participants and other youth 13 years and older.

Develop and provide leadership to second-stage programming for KIOS participants and other young people, such as creative arts, cooking, sports, baby sitting courses, etc.

Provide leadership to the development of age appropriate youth groups that will incorporate a strong outreach, discipleship and mentoring focus.

Collaborate with Corps Officers and volunteer leaders to ensure the effective coordination of program schedules, delivery and related events for children/youth/young adults and families.

Research, develop and implement a plan for leadership development; recruit, train, evaluate and retain volunteer leaders and front-line volunteers for children and youth ministries and facilitate opportunities for further training, spiritual support, and volunteer recognition; act as a resource and conduct regular leader meetings.

Demonstrate keen pastoral interest in and involvement with children and youth and their families.

Provide support to Corps Officers in the areas of planning, management, program execution and communications.

In conjunction with the Corps Officers, collaborate on and assist with initiatives designed to connect unchurched individuals and families with existing or developing congregational ministries (i.e. Gracepoint).

Participate in various strategic initiatives that may be outside of the day-to-day children and youth ministry activities, but which are designed to assist the Owen Sound Community Church to achieve desired outcomes.

Participate on a local ministerial level including liaising/communicating with other local pastors/youth directors.

Participate where opportunity exists with other churches and organizations to organize and implement city wide youth focus events.

Participate where opportunity exists in local schools and high schools.

Promote and participate in Divisional youth events, programs and camps, as appropriate and as schedule allows.

Promote the KIOS program and other youth initiatives through media, interaction with local agencies, and presentations to service clubs and community groups as appropriate.

Prepare and submit annual program budget data.  Ensure that programs remain within budgetary criteria.  Monitor the financial performance of children and youth programs accordingly.

Implement policies, procedures and develops others if necessary related to children and youth ministries.

Oversee the maintenance, upkeep and storage of equipment and supplies related to children and youth ministries as required.

Assist with funding raising initiatives in support of children and youth programs.

Perform other position related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of an Undergraduate Degree in biblical studies or equivalent education

Minimum 5 years related experience in managing programs, supervising and/or experience working with children and youth.

Experience in transformational leadership.

Effective time management, organizational skills, and computer skills (Microsoft Office 2010).

A working knowledge of youth culture and needs, with the ability to mentor youth.

Ability to develop strategies for effective Conflict Resolution.

Participation in The Salvation Army Owen Sound Community Church as an active member is expected

Ability to work with a variety of ages and skill levels.

Strong interpersonal skills – able to develop collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders.

Willingness to obtain:

Valid CPR/First Aid Certification and Safe Food Handling Certification

Ability to teach and lead various activities creatively and to communicate effectively.

Excellent character, integrity, and adaptability.

Self-motivated and disciplined.

Behave ethically, build relationships, communicate effectively, foster teamwork, lead, plan, solve problems and think strategically.

A valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle and insurance is required as well as a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening (where applicable) that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada. 

NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

 

This is a temporary full time position.  Schedule will vary according to the requirements and other various onsite and offsite responsibilities of the position – weekend and evening work will be required. Travel is required, both locally and regionally.

 

Hours of work will be determined in consultation with the Corps Officer; flexibility is required due to the programming requirements.

 

This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods and overtime compensation. Salary is based on average minimum weekly hours of 35 per week and hours worked are compensated through the annual salary amount.
