Counsellor, Child and Youth

Temporary 6 Month Contract, October 26th, 2017 – May 8th, 2018

 Full Time – 37.5 hours/week

 

Who We Are:

The Brenda Strafford Centre encompasses a Second Stage Shelter and Transitional Housing Program (Progressive Housing), serving women and children seeking safety from family violence from a client-centered and trauma informed approach that allows families to lead their care in a safe, secure, and supportive environment. We are currently seeking a Counsellor, Child and Youth, who will provide collaborative support to children and their caregivers living at the Brenda Strafford Society.  This is a temporary, full-time position, reporting to the Team Lead, Child and Youth Counselling.

 

The successful applicant will:

  • Have a BSW, Master’s in Social Work or Applied Psychology/Counselling Psychology
  • Work 1-2 evenings per week
  • Have experience working with children and families in the field of family violence
  • Have knowledge of community resources
  • Have proven child therapy skills, understanding of domestic violence and experience in the family violence sector
  • Have a strong work ethic and commitment to delivering ethical, cultural and client –centered services to vulnerable populations

The primary responsibilities of this role are to:

  • Provide 1:1 counseling for children and parents
  • Provide family interventions and counselling
  • Plan and facilitate group counselling to the children, youth, women and parents
  • Administer tools/instruments and collect data
  • Develop and implement individualized support plans, maintain administrative and evaluative documentation
  • Maintain awareness of available services for children and their families and provide appropriate referrals and resources; coordinate recreational opportunities
  • Work closely with families who have complex needs in navigating community resources and agencies
  • Use of trauma-informed and client-centered lens, respect for clients’ right to self-determination
  • Provide culturally-sensitive support
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all aspects of work
