Carizon Family and Community Services specializes in children’s mental health, youth engagement and development, family violence services, individual and family counselling, parental support and education, credit counselling, workplace resilience, settlement support and community wellness.



The Health and Safety Coordinator/HR Generalist reports to the Director of Talent Management and Engagement and is part of the Human Resources team.  The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the health and safety program and general HR support.  The role acts as a resource and advisor to management and staff on all health and safety concerns.  The incumbent analyzes the organization’s health and safety data to identify trends and develop pro-active strategies to reduce the likelihood of occurrence. In addition, this position will provide support to the risk management, other human resources administration and special projects as assigned.


This position is a part-time (21 hours/week) temporary contract until June 30, 2018.



  • Work with Directors, Managers and Supervisors to plan, establish, implement, and maintain a variety of occupational health, safety, environmental programs to assure a safe work environment and minimize workplace injuries.
  • Provide orientation and training for Managers and staff on health and safety and other human resources areas, as required.
  • Make recommendations on changes to the Health and Safety program, including policies and procedures, training and reporting. Ensure completion of workplace audits and participate as required.
  • Participate in health and safety initiatives mandated by the Ministry of Labour.
  • Act as a management representative for Carizon’s Health and Safety Committees
  • Review health and safety related incidents and analyze incident data for the purpose of trend identification and development of preventative measures.
  • Provide direction and expertise to immediate Supervisors on health and safety incidents requiring immediate attention, conduct or advise staff on immediate follow up investigations, recommend action and monitor resolution of issues.
  • Participate in HR departmental planning and projects by preparing recommendations and developing communication materials as appropriate
  • Administer the WSIB and the Stay-at-Work/Return-to-Work programs.
  • Identify health and safety training and development opportunities for managers and employees; research and develop programs; facilitate training when required.
  • Design, lead and implement Carizon’s wellness program.
  • Partner with leadership and staff to implement and lead HR programs that support and forward the mission, vision and strategic objectives of Carizon, ensuring agency compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and parameters of the collective agreement
  • Monitor various programs including vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and EAP  and make recommendations on program and policy changes
  • Prepare reports and recommends procedures to reduce absenteeism and turnover
  • To always perform work safely and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)



  • A post-secondary degree in a related field or equivalent experience in health and safety and human resources.
  • Workplace health and safety certification is desirable.
  • Minimum of three (3) years progressive professional experience.
  • Experience in children’s services and/or mental health service delivery is considered an asset.
  • CHRP/CHRL designation is preferred and considered an asset
  • Experience in a unionized environment is considered an asset
  • Experience in the Not-for-Profit sector is desirable.
  • Experience sharing knowledge through teaching, coaching and training.
  • Experience with workplace health and safety and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Workplace Safety Insurance Act.
  • Competency in word processing, electronic presentations, electronic mail, web use, social media and web research. Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Internet search tools.
  • Experience working with databases and analyzing data to determine outcome measurements.
