Job Summary

 

Westcoast Family Centres Society (WFCS) Family Ties Services offers a Parenting Support Service for parents challenged by parenting after separation or divorce.  In some of these cases aforementioned, there many complex Family Law Act (FLA)  issues that include:  organizing Access (supervised and unsupervised) Visits for Parenting Time and promoting effective co-parenting, concerns with parental alienation and disorganized attachment issues, children experience and witness of domestic violence, and individuals affected by intimate relationship and domestic violence.

 

MCFD has become involved in the above described cases due to each parent expressing concerns about the other parent’s parenting practice, skills, and/or behaviors as well as being re-exposed to the domestic violence with the other parent.  When the concerns have been investigated and address by Social Workers and there are no child welfare or protection issues, then the Social Worker can refer either or both parents to the Family TIES Services Parenting Support Service, and close their file.  The Family TIES Services Parenting Support Service is a supportive contract for the MCFD and also a fee-based service for the clients.

 

This Service will provide:

 

An initial Intake Meeting to engage the Client/Customer in a review of the Application/Referral for Services, Family

TIEs Terms and Agreement to Services, and other Forms.  The Service will also include a Clinical screening and

assessment of service needs and goals, and an assignment of Staff to provide services.  The Intake Meeting,

Clinical Screening and Assessment, and Case Assignment is provided by a qualified and experienced and Clinical

Director/Supervisor.  This individual will also review and asses the progress of the Services towards the meeting of

services needs and goals.

 

The Staff Assigned could involve:

 

  • 1/1 Family Counsellor to provide Supervised Access Visits or Therapeutic Supervised Access Visits to support child(ren) and parent contact towards promotion of relationship-building and attachment.
  • 1/1 Family Counsellor to work with the parent(s) regarding gaining information, education, skills, and strategies to co-parent effectively after separation or divorce;
  • The Family Counsellor to link the parent(s) to education and support group Programs that will further support the parent of children after separation or divorce, such as, the Parenting after Separation (PAS) offered by the Ministry of Attorney General, the Successful Co-Parenting Program offered by Westcoast Family Centres Society (WFCS) and so forth.
  • The Family Counsellor to offer interconnected couples’ and individual counselling (from a child-best interest perspective) that will support the development of a co-parenting plan and agreement to best parent the child(ren).
  • The Family Counsellor to offer links to child(ren)-based services (such as, play therapy) to best support the child(ren) experiencing parenting and challenges of parenting after separation and divorce.
  • The Family Counsellor to offer links to group child(ren)-based services to best support the child(ren) experiencing parenting and challenges of parenting after separation and divorce.
  • The Family Counsellor to offer links to attachment-promoting therapeutic services to support the individual parent in promoting their attachment to their child(ren) while ensuring that the other parent’s attachment with the child(ren) are not impacted.
  • The Family Counsellor to offer documentation of a Service Plan to document the services discussed above and Comprehensive Report(s) on the progress of the parents towards parenting effectively after separation and divorce, and the emotion, physical, and spiritual well-being of the child(ren).
  • Provide assessment of family and/or child functioning and needs.
  • Provide time limited interventions with a standard length of service appropriate to each program model
  • Plans for timely resolution of the presenting problems or crises within the projected timeframe
  • Develop and implement a counselling, support and intervention plan in collaboration with the family and their ICM team
  • Provide counselling, support and intervention services in the family home or in the community, as appropriate.
  • Liaise with others providing service to the family
  • Work in a collaborative form with MCFD to serve in the best interest of the Child
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of services delivered to the child, youth or family.
  • Redevelop goals with the client on a regular basis, as problems are resolved
  • Support the client, particularly in regard to housing, health, basic needs or schooling.
  • Co-facilitate group parent education and support programs
  • Provide culturally competent service to clients.
  • Maintains timely records of assessments, contacts, logs referrals and MCFD reports..
  • Remain up-to-date with all services provided by WFRS and its community partners.
  • Participate in committees and agency initiatives to contribute to the development of agency services/program delivery.
  • To work collaboratively as a team with management, team leaders and other WFRS Peers in delivery of services according to the agency mission and values.
  • To work collaboratively as a team with supervisor and peers in delivery of specific service goals according to the agency mission and values.
  • Provide information on our program/our policies/ and define responsibilities (ours and theirs) throughout a client’s involvement with the program (prior, at intake, during process)
  • Respect client’s rights to accept or decline our services, inform them of the consequences of declining our services.
  • Assist in making recommendations to other resources if possible when service is declined or when other services are needed by the clients while in our program.
  • Ensure that every client receives an Intake Package and review it with the clients
  • Ensure that clients are involved in the report writing process/goal development/service plan where appropriate
  • Ensure that regular and ongoing feedback from clients is requested and properly documented, filed, and a follow up on recommendations are considered.
  • Help create a friendly, culturally sensitive, and welcoming environment for clients
  • Attend case conferences
  • Attend Case conference with other professionals
  • Connect clients to community services
  • Other duties as required.

 Knowledge, training, experience, and skills of the Family Counsellor will include:

  • Knowledge, training, and experience in Family Law Mediation, and/or Best-Interest Mediation.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience in Child Therapy and/or Play Therapy
  • Knowledge, training, and experience in facilitating Children and Adult Groups.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience in providing services to address intimate relationship and domestic violence.
  • Knowledge, training and experience in providing services to address intimate relationship and domestic violence, and children affected by intimate relationship and domestic violence.
  • Knowledge, experience, and skills writing Service Plans and Comprehensive Reports on Service delivery and engagement, respectively, for Clients/Customers of Service.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience in Integrative Case Management (working with other professionals involve with the parents, and facilitating case conferences, as needed).
  • Knowledge and liaising of Client/Customers to Services.

 Education/Qualifications

  • Relevant Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology; Marriage and Family Therapy; and/or Social Services/or Family Justice Services with 3 years experience, or relevant BA with 5 years experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Computer operating systems, ie. Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Publisher
  • An understanding of integrated case management/wrap around service delivery
  • Work with families who may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, and mental health issues.
  • Provide counselling in a variety of approaches that best fits client needs
  • Must have thorough understanding of the Family Law Act
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Current First Aid and Class Five Driver’s License.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Driver’s abstract

Working Conditions

  • Vehicle required for this position
  • Work evenings and weekends when required
  • Working in multiple sites when needed
