WJS Canada is currently looking for an individual to join our Sumas House team, as a Casual / On-Call Awake Residential Night Worker.

The Program:

The Sumas House Program is designed to accommodate youth that have experienced a history of failure in other programs and group homes. Our services support youth recovering from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and overcoming other adversity by providing them with housing and trauma-based guidance.

 

We accommodate and support traumatized youth in comfortable and welcoming facilities with twenty four hour staffing. Paired housemates share common areas but each child has his or her own bedroom. We offer a safe environment in a residential and friendly neighbourhood. An open door policy encourages a wandering youth to return at any time.


The Positions and Scheduling:

The casual / on-call Awake Residential Night Worker (ARNW) for this licensed, accredited agency attends to the health, well-being, safety and security of residents and the program site at night, and provides general, non-specific services to clients as required.   This position will be alone during the overnight hours and must feel comfortable working alone, with support from the On-Call Manager, as needed.  Maintains a comfortable and clean living environment.  This position requires union membership with CUPE.   

 

This casual / on-call Awake Residential Night Worker position will work a variety of shifts that include (overnight) weekday and weekend shifts with scheduling such as 2400-0800.  Casual shifts will cover vacation, sick time and extra staffing requirements, as needed, up to a maximum of 40 hours per week.  A casual position has the potential to lead into a part-time or full-time role.

As an ideal candidate you possess:

  • Grade 12 education plus certificate or minimum of 6 months equivalent experience in related human/social service field
  • Other combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Current WCB Occupational First Aid, Level 1 (or ability to obtain within the probation period)
  • Experience with behaviour management, basic sign language and/or alternative communications strategies training
  • Ability to use common computer applications required (training provided)

 

Other Requirements:

  • Clear physician’s note confirming suitability, including a negative tuberculosis screening test
  • Experience with Trauma Informed practices and Crisis Intervention
  • Successful candidate must sign an oath of confidentiality, a conflict of interest statement, abuse protocols and a code of ethics statement.
