PRETEEN OUTREACH WORKER

RATE:                       $20.45 per hour

Hours of Work:         Full- time - 35 hours per week working a flexible schedule       

Location:                   North Shore Neighbourhood House position provides service to the City of North Vancouver area     

 4 months probation period (85% rate of pay during 4 months until successful completion) required to attain  Class 4 Drivers Licence - applicants must have a full privilege class 5 drivers licence

Nature and Scope of Work

 

This is community outreach work in providing support services and programs for youth aged 10 to 12 and their families in the area serviced by NSNH.  An incumbent works with a wide variety of community service agencies, government departments, community groups and individuals.  The incumbent also provides networking and referral service for the client group.  Considerable independence of judgment and action is exercised by the incumbent in carrying out the day to day duties and responsibilities of the work within the limits of established policies, procedures and guidelines.  Work performance is reviewed by a supervisor in terms of effective services rendered and achievement of predetermined objectives.

 

Illustrative Examples of Work

 

Develops positive relationships with the client group; identifying their needs and interests in order to work with them in designing programs to meet those needs and interests.

 

Develops and promotes programs to benefit the social, educational and cultural development of youth. 

 

Provides support services and resource to youth and families.

 

Acts as a resource to various community groups and service providers; working with all sectors of the community to raise awareness of youth issues for pre-teens.

 

Provides life skills information and encourages healthy leisure time activities.

 

Provides drug & alcohol presentations; provides assessment regarding use and misuse and makes appropriate referrals.

 

Prepares and maintains a wide variety of reports and records related to the work performed.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

 

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

 

Considerable knowledge of the issues, needs and concerns of pre-teens and their psychosocial development.

 

Considerable knowledge of available social, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities and services available in the area serviced by NSNH.

 

Considerable knowledge of practices, techniques and principles relating to behaviour management and psychosocial development.

 

Ability to establish effective working relations and communicate effectively with youth, community groups, other service providers, staff and community members.

 

Ability to identify and promote initiatives to enhance pre-teen involvement and participation in community activities.

 

Good knowledge of the issues surrounding the use and misuse of drugs and alcohol.

 

 Ability to deliver educational classroom presentations.

 

Sound knowledge of practices, policies, and procedures applicable to youth outreach work.

 

Desirable Training and Experience

 

Degree in Child and Youth Care, Psychology or Education, coupled with considerable experience working with the 10 to 12 year old.  Substance Misuse certificate would be desirable or the willingness to obtain.
