The Executive Director is a leadership position in CCIJ. The Executive Director is accountable for directing the programs and services of the organization, and providing direction and guidance to CCIJ staff. CCIJ is a small, dynamic organization operating with a collaborative model and the Executive Director’s role emphasizes service leadership and a cooperative relationship with staff members and consultants.


General Services

The Executive Director, working closely with the Legal Director and Finance Director, oversees and directs the day-to-day operations of CCIJ, and assumes responsibility for ensuring adherence to the organization’s policies, and all statutory and regulatory requirements, and acting as the primary liaison with and support to the Board of Directors, as well as for organizational planning, risk management, and for implementing the goals, policy and directions set by the Board of Directors.


Key areas of responsibility of this role in relation to CCIJ’s priorities include:

  • overall financial management
  • overseeing and managing CCIJ’s fundraising strategy, programs and events
  • developing ongoing relationships with existing and potential contributors and partners,
  • community and public relations
  • marketing and delivery of continuing legal education activities in co-operation with the Legal Director
  • human resources management of the organization.

Time commitment and level of effort: This is a management level position. Although it is a full time position, there is job flexibility and the position could be reduced to a four-day work week, working on average thirty hours per week, subject to negotiation.


Candidate profile: This position is aimed at persons who are committed to social justice. The ideal candidate is looking for a challenging and rewarding position in a dynamic field, with job flexibility and opportunities for growth.



Degree from a recognized university or college, or equivalent experience in management, community development, fundraising or related field.


Knowledge skills and abilities:

- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written in English

- Fluent oral communication skills in French

- 5+ years of demonstrated experience in leadership and management, including overall financial and HR management, with strong preference being given to experience within the non-profit sector

- Knowledge of and experience in fund and resource development

- Knowledge of the social justice sector, especially as regards human rights, is considered an asset

- Knowledge of challenges and opportunities that relate to the mission of CCIJ

- Demonstrated experience with managing projects and ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

- Ability to manage and collaborate with staff and consultants in a collaborative manner.



Ideally, this position is based at CCIJ’s office in Ottawa, Canada. Consideration will be given to location elsewhere in Canada, based on the circumstances of the successful candidate.


The position will require some travel in Canada, and may require occasional travel abroad.



The position reports to the Board of Directors.


Language requirements

Fluency in English is required and high proficiency in French is highly desirable


Salary and benefits

$57,750-$68,750 per year, plus 10% in lieu of benefits.
