Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society (LFVAS) is accepting applications for a Resource Navigator contract position for the Full Circle (Non-Housing First) Program.

 

The Resource Navigator is responsible for providing support services to Aboriginal peoples, primarily youth, at imminent risk of homelessness. This includes connecting with potential clients, conducting the intake process, providing one-on-one life skills support, and referrals to partner organizations.

 

Reporting to the Housing Coordinator, the Resource Navigator works closely with individuals/families at imminent risk of homelessness, other community partner organizations, landlords, government representatives, and as well as other LFVAS staff, using cultural agility and an Aboriginal-centered, evidence-based service approach.

 

DURATION: November 2017 to March 2018, potential for employment after March

 

EXTENT: 120 hours per month, some evenings and weekends

 

WORK LOCATIONS: Langley City, Langley Township

 

This position is funded by Service Canada through its Community Entities and is contingent upon on-going funding. The successful applicant is considered a contractor and will therefore:

  • Indemnify the Society from any and all statutory and other employment-related costs such as payroll (source) deductions, overtime, statutory holiday pay, vacation pay, etc.
  • Have their own transportation, cell phone, and computer.

 

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Meet with potential clients, assess and determine the appropriate response to youth or adult housing needs, conduct intake as necessary.
  • Help clients set and maintain goals related to procuring and maintaining housing.
  • Provide one-on-one assistance with clients to prevent homelessness.
  • Assist with one-on-one life skills training.
  • Refer clients to other Non-Housing First support programs or programs from partner organizations.
  • Establish relationships with partner organizations on the Housing First Advisory Committee.
  • Gather data and diligently maintain records in prescribed form. Provide regular reports and updates on progress with participants, housing placements, retention, activities and outcomes.
  • Other related duties as required.

Experience & Education:

  • Diploma or degree in human services, social work or community planning, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of vulnerable populations which may include such disciplines and fields of study as: social work, mental health, rehabilitation practitioner, nursing, youth work, or native studies.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in case management, community outreach, mental health, addictions or housing programs in a front line capacity.
  • Exposure to or direct work history with principles of evidence-based practice, client centered approaches, and harm reduction models.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Prior experience meeting the needs of vulnerable populations relative to housing is preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have Aboriginal cultural agility and demonstrate appropriate behavioural competencies.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Record Review for work with vulnerable adults and children.
  • Must sign Oath of Confidentiality.
  • Primary source credential verification.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.
