What we need:       A positive, client-oriented individual who:

  • Is inspired to help recent immigrants achieve their employment goals
  • Has Post-secondary education preferably in Career and Work Counseling, and/or three years’ equivalent work related experience in Employment Counseling/Case Management
  • Has three years recent, related experience providing job-search assistance to Newcomers to Canada and/or experience in an employment related capacity
  • Has knowledge of assessment tools for career exploration to guide clients with clarifying preferences in terms of temperament, skills, values and interests
  • Has demonstrated ability to facilitate in Coaching, Needs Assessment, taking a holistic approach to assist clients in identifying alternative occupation and short and long term goals,
  • Has demonstrated ability to facilitate and design career development workshops covering all aspects of the career development cycle from: Self-Assessment, Labour Market Information to Job Search Workshop Facilitation
  • Will be able to assist Newcomer clients in all of the employability dimensions
  • Is knowledgeable of the Canadian labour market, Canadian workplace practices, job search strategies and techniques
  • Has experience working with people from various cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Has excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task and problem solve in order to meet program delivery targets
  • Is demonstrably proficient in English
  • Must possess strong written English communication skills in order to edit technical resumes, cover letters and academic CV’s
  • Has knowledge of and fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese, a strong asset
  • Has intermediate proficiency in MS Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
  • Has a valid Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle 

What you will do: Support Job Skills’ Newcomer Services and Programs by:

  • Utilize assessment methods to determine client needs and assist in developing a Return to Work Action Plan
  • Assess need for additional assistance such as language/skills training, settlement support, accreditation assistance, mentoring, family services support, housing support, rehabilitation, and make appropriate referrals to those supports
  • Support clients on issues related to job searching and the ways and means of conducting an effective job search through coaching on effective job search strategies, improving resume writing, interview techniques and networking, including social media
  • Liaise with all Welcome Centre services and partner agencies, as well as Employment Ontario Employment Service providers and other social, employment and community agencies, on mutual clients, as needed, to facilitate progress

In this role, you will utilize your unique combination of skills and experience to support Job Skills’ in the York Region Welcome Centre locations in collaboration with the Welcome Centre team.
