Shelter Counsellor

Temporary Contract – 37.5 hours/week

 

Who we are:

 

The Brenda Strafford Centre encompasses a Second Stage Shelter and Transitional Housing Program (Progressive Housing), serving women and children seeking safety from family violence from a client-centered and trauma informed approach that allows families to lead their care in a safe, secure, and supportive environment. We are seeking a Counsellor who will provide collaborative and client-centered support to women living in the Second Stage and Transitional Housing Programs. The Shelter Program is a critical component of service provision at the Centre and requires the application of a flexible, non-judgmental, and cross-cultural lens in order to provide the highest quality case management, counseling, and crisis intervention. This is a temporary, full-time position, reporting to the Adult Counselling Team Lead/Mental Health Specialist.

 

Key responsibilities of the Shelter Counsellor role will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide supportive case management and counseling, planning and preparing weekly sessions
  • Work with clients to explore and examine cycle of abuse, intergenerational trauma, and healthy relationships
  • In partnership with client, assess short term and long term needs, develop a support plan, and create goals
  • Support clients in navigating systems (eg. AISH, Justice System, Alberta Works), acting as an advocate, where necessary
  • Support and respond to client crises, providing crisis intervention/counseling and referrals
  • Maintain awareness of available services in the community for women and families and a commitment to stay up to date regarding research, best practices, and current trends in the field of family violence.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other key roles at the Centre to provide wrap-around support to client
  • Support and respond to issues that may arise for clients around transitioning back to community
  • Coordinate, participate in, and/or develop innovative programming for clients
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners in service of clients and/or the larger family violence-serving sector

 

You will need:

  • Degree/Diploma in Social Work/Psychology/related discipline with at least two years’ experience working in a case management or counseling role preferred
  • To belong to a governing body whose standards and ethics you adhere to (eg. ACSW, CCC)
  • Strong critical thinking skills and high level of self-awareness
  • Understanding of and experience with working with vulnerable populations with complex challenges around intergenerational trauma, mental health issues, addiction, attachment disruption
  • Understanding of family violence as a personal, social, and political issue and an understanding of the impact that it has on families
  • Ability and comfort working with diverse populations
  • A commitment to anti-oppressive practice
  • Demonstrate initiative and promote environment that is dedicated to innovation and best practices within the field
  • Use of culturally aware and client-centred approaches your work
  • An understanding of trauma and its impact on women and children
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, understanding of how to use these to engage with complex clients
  • A strong work ethic with a commitment to delivering safe, ethical, and high quality services

This position is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Some evenings required.
