Pathways to Education™, Graduation Strategy

 6 months term (35hour/week)


The primary goal of the Pathways to Education Program is to enhance the educational success of youth living in the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona community. The Pathways program is part of the Our Place Graduation Strategy, a place-based initiative designed to improve graduation rates for inner city children.  The Graduation Strategy is part of Our Place, a collaboration of parents, community organizations, and professionals working together to make the inner-city a place where children and families thrive. The school-based programs are based at the secondary and elementary levels.  The education focus also includes adult education which may be offered in the community.


Comprehensive supports include: tutoring, peer support, mentorship, primary health care and assessments, family support, sports and recreation, counseling and advocacy. Through Our Place, the Graduation Strategy is complemented by and economic development strategy, a family development and support strategy and a health and wellness strategy.


Position Summary:

The Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for providing 1-to-1 support to children (Grades 7) to connect them with the existing academic, social and emotional supports in the community. One of the priorities of this position is to develop trust and consistent relationships with the most vulnerable children and youth building bridges with the community supports. The Youth Outreach Worker will reach out to families and liaise with school staff, and community staff to identify and address the needed supports. This position will work in collaboration with a team of workers committed to supporting the educational success of children and youth in the DTES/Strathcona community.


Primary Duties:

1)Outreach and recruitment:

  • Make presentations in classrooms and information tables in schools to promote program to children and youth.
  • Connect with local schools staff and community school teams to identify most vulnerable children and youth.


2) Build trusting and on-going relationships with most vulnerable children and youth in the community (Strathcona/DTES neighbourhood):

  • In collaboration with children/youth identify goals, strengths and barriers to engage then meaningfully in the supports they need.
  • Develop plans in collaboration with children, parents, school staff and community staff to ensure school attendance, connection to afterschool activities, and access to health care, emotional and mental supports, school success.
  • Track engagement and connections of children with programs, supports and services in the community.
  • Develop effective programming to support children’s successful transition into high school.


3) In collaboration with the Graduation Strategy Management team, liaise with key colleagues to improve programs and services:

  • Report on enrolment, participation, outcomes
  • Collaborate and communicate strategies with afterschool staff to build on what is working and enhance the existing programs to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children/youth
  • Liaise with the volunteer tutors in the afterschool and family programs to ensure they are engaged and are addressing the needs of the children


Dimensions of Work:

  • Primary interface is directly with youth and volunteers in the Pathways program
  • Direct reporting relationship to Supervisor
  • Coordination and sharing information with relevant program, school, and community staff


Work Conditions:

  • Hours are based on a flexible schedule. Workers should be available to work evenings and potentially weekends, as there may be a need for earlier or later hours depending upon circumstances to offer support to youth at key times.
  • Travel between multiple sites in the community


Academic and Job Experience Required:

A relevant post-secondary degree (Child and Youth Work, Education, Psychology, Social Work) or Child & Youth Care Diploma, plus 2 years of experience working with at-risk youth populations, or a combination of related education and work experience with youth.


Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check including the vulnerable sector.
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate will be an asset.


Desired Requirements:

  • Experience working with youth and families in the Downtown Eastside community
  • Experience working in programs supporting the educational success of youth
  • Experience and/or knowledge of working with the public school system
  • Specific training and/or experience with youth with special needs or new language learners
  • Experience working with and guiding volunteers
Salary Range:     $22.74/hour – $25.88/hour, plus .58/hour in lieu of benefits
