RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses

Participate in hiring, orientating, and training, evaluating, recognizing, disciplining and terminating of staff in concert with Territorial standards in conjunction with the Ontario Great Lakes Divisional Employee Relations Department.; submits and acts on incident reports; deals with complaints.

Manage health/safety and other related issues at a store level

Provide direction and support to all staff so that they may develop and to ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.

Responsible for the recruitment, selection, screening, training, orientation, and recognition of volunteers and ensure that policies and procedures are followed. 

Supervise as well as participate in sorting and tagging merchandise, unloading donations, stocking shelves and performing cash transactions

Plan store layout to attract customers, including window displays and merchandise displays, decides on in-store promotions and auctions; ensure attractiveness of the store through ''Tidy Maintenance"

Maintain a high level of customer service and create an attractive environment for customers

Determine and maintain appropriate stock levels based on spot checks of the store and reviewing weekly sales records

Complete all financial/operational paperwork and submit same to Ministry Unit Officer/s in a timely manner, and in accordance with organisation standards

Ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the store is up to standard policy

Maintain control of inventory by ensuring that all merchandise is priced appropriately; control inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring

Ensure in-store safety of volunteers and customers, i.e. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, clean spillage; ensure that the property (store) is secured at all times

Participate in the development of and manage in-store budget within guidelines; ensure that banking is completed as per store policy

Formulate appropriate action to attain financial goals, monitor cost of store supplies

Assure prompt and accurate check out service by properly supervising the training and scheduling of volunteers in accordance with the workload

Prepare financial and other reports as required by the Ministry Unit Officer

Perform other position related duties as required

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a College Diploma in Business/Retail Management or equivalent. 

Basic accounting experience is required.

Minimum of three (3) years of prior related retail store management experience, specifically in second hand merchandise preferred

Self-motivated and disciplined

Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes

Strong operations experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management and office management

Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication, leadership and organisational skills

Ability to lift/move 40 lbs. (18.14 kgs)

Must have strong computer skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL)

Ability to develop and maintain a team environment

Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required

Provide an original copy of a Background Check screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment

Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada

May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry

NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

 

This is a permanent full time position.  Flexibility in scheduling is required - will vary from week to week and will include weekdays and Saturdays as per operational requirements.  Some travel is required.

 

This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods, and overtime compensation.  Salary is based on average minimum weekly hours of 37.5 per week and hours worked are compensated through the salary amount.
