Residential Support Worker-Pregnant Parenting Women

ON CALL AUXILIARY

Location: Burnaby

We are looking for a Residential Support Worker who shares our values and wants to work in a semi-independent living program for up to four pregnant women or women with newborns awaiting access to safe, affordable housing following addictions counselling or treatment. Women may reside in the program for up to 3 months. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents on a daily basis through providing support & assistance. Hours of work generally fall with the afternoon and early evenings.

 

Key Duties/Accountabilities:

You are responsible to establish rapport and a positive relation with women to support them maintaining an abstinence focused life, and planning for their long term future. Your key duties are to ensure the house is maintained through a cooperative shared workload of household duties, that women are comfortable and confident to meet the needs of their child, and to ensure that the physical resources and supplies necessary for women are available.  A supervisor or on call designate is available as needed for consultation or crisis. Light housekeeping duties such as vacuuming, cleaning, laundry, changing light bulbs, etc are a part of the shared cooperative model of staff and residents. You may be involved in meal preparation and maintaining the necessary food inventory.

 

Education and Experience:

  • 4 years University or combination 4 years College /or Diploma in related field
  • Minimum 6 months previous related experience working with a previous residential setting.
  • WCB Level One First Aid, Food Safe Certificate

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience of gender specific needs of women
  • Knowledge of mental health & alcohol/drug issues
  • Understanding of harm reduction philosophy
  • Crisis intervention & counselling skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
