ACORN Canada is looking for motivated individuals interested in fighting and winning local, and national social justice campaigns.

 

ACORN Canada is made up of more than 100,000 low- and moderate-income member families, in 21 local chapters of ACORN throughout the country, organized democratically through community organizing. We are Canada's largest grassroots community organization for low and moderate income families. We have won many important social justice campaigns like Fair Banking, Renter’s Rights Campaigns, stopping Disability Assistance claw-backs, Food Security in Gatineau, Raising the Minimum Wage, Internet for All, and more!

 

ACORN is a union in the community. Like any union our members pay membership dues so that they can have a sustainable independent organization to fight for their interest. Part of everyone's job at ACORN, both staff and members, are to work to increase our membership and retain out independence.

 

Organizer Job Description

-To community organize. Expand the reach of Ottawa ACORN's economic justice campaigns in low to-moderate income neighbourhoods.

-The job will include: direct door to door contact, follow ups (second) visits to newly engaged people, phone outreach, helping our membership plan meetings / actions and help develop the campaign strategies that make up ACORN's ongoing social and economic justice campaigns.

-Recruit new members, engage with current members and leaders of ACORN

-We organize in the field predominately when many people are at home; must be willing work field hours between 12PM and 9PM

-Leaders who are willing to work independently in a grassroots setting

-Willing to handle challenging and rewarding work to help our membership grow to be strong and active leaders

-Willing to be part of a team that is building a community organization whose purpose is to win for low and moderate income people across Canada for years to come

-Opportunity to participate in direct action and social justice issues decided by ACORN’s current community leaders while cultivating new leaders who will spearhead our future initiatives

 

Experience: No experience is required. Professional organizing training provided.

 

Positions available: Part Time, with room for advancement to Full Time.

 

Room for advancement in organization is available after training period (also includes benefits, travel, vacation, sick days and other benefits).

 

Regions: Ottawa/Gatineau
