Job Title:                       Family & Youth Counsellor

Department:                 C&F Services – Parent Education & Outreach

Salary:                          Hourly rate subject to Collective Agreement (CUPE): Grid Level 14, Step 1 – $25.74     qualifications and experience

Hours:                           35 hours per week

Job Summary:

The Child & Family Services – Parent Education & Outreach is funded by MCFD.

 

Position is outreach based providing service in client’s homes and in the community.

 

 Provides counselling interventions to families with children aged 0- 14, on an individual and group and/or family basis, based on identified client needs. Involves working with individual family members and/or family units to collaboratively assess problems and implement a variety of

counselling techniques to improve parenting and family functioning. Provides skill-building and educational approaches to assist in identified problem areas. Provides case management services.

Parents are empowered to make changes in their lives that will enable them to meet their children's developmental needs and provide them with a safe environment.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively with clients, interviews clients, and prepares case histories as required based on assessment tools. Provides structured analyses and case planning regarding the client’s problems, where appropriate.
  • Develops and implements counselling plans and interventions, for both individuals and groups using a variety of counselling techniques.
  • Keeps current with other community resources and liaises with other community service providers and professionals where required to ensure best client care and external referrals.
  • Provides skill building to clients, on topics such as: parenting children 0-14 years old, developmental stages of children aged 0-14 years old, assertiveness, communication, anger management, and other topics identified as relevant to healthy family functioning.
  • Maintains objective case notes, related records, evaluations, statistics, and provides reports to supervisor as required.
  • Engages in frequent client case discussion and maintains self-awareness through a supervision and feedback process to ensure professional boundaries are maintained and best client service is provided.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related Human/Social Service field such as: Social Work, Education, or Child and Youth Care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultural diversity in families and a variety of individual and group counselling theories and techniques. Knowledge of MCFD reporting procedures also required. Experience with a variety of well known counselling approaches to suit client needs.
  • Experience working collaboratively with clients to engage them in the counselling process.
  • PC use - including Windows, Excel, WORD, Access, and Outlook.
  • First Aid.

 

 

Job Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Well-developed interpersonal, counselling, communication skills.
  • Proficient advocacy, coaching and instructions skills.
  • Good organization, time and general management skills.
  • Ability to complete paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • May be required to work outside normal office hours.
  • Ability to work in the homes of clients and other community settings to provide flexible service.

 

Additional Information:

  • Criminal record check is required.
  • Union (CUPE) Membership required.
  • Valid Driver’s Licence and use of personal vehicle with appropriate insurance is required.
  • Mileage is paid where driving for work performed is required. Mileage is not paid for to and from work site for start and end of shift purposes.
  • This position operates on a flexitime schedule as per Collective Agreement.
