Prepare an ongoing list of food supplies needed according to menus; prepare food orders as needed, for purchasing.

Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada’s Food Guide.

Make use of and decides on the best use of resources to minimize waste.

Arrange and prepare for any special dietary needs of children.

Record entries and deviations of the menu in the daily log, ensuring log is up-to-date for inspection.

Ensure that daily temperatures are recorded for the sterile refrigerator and freezer, they are up-to-date for inspection

Maintain high nutritional value based on safety regulations.

Estimate food requirements, monitor and order food supplies; maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment.

Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas; cleanliness of all equipment, food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, dishes, utensils, drawers, and cupboards.

Ensure that Department of Health and Fire regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and food storage areas.

Provide supervision, assign responsibilities and training of volunteers and report to appropriate staff any volunteer behaviors that are not in keeping with program expectations.

Work with predetermined budget.

Receive, check, and store food supplies when they are delivered; maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and food storage areas (pantry, freezers and fridges)

Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program to the Assistant Program Director, Team Leader, and/or Property Manager.

Perform other position related duties as required.


Physical Demands:

The Kitchen environment can be a physically demanding environment requiring substantial physical effort at times with heavy lifting and sometimes-long period of repetitive tasks.  The employee must have physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure fast pace conditions.  The employee will be standing; walking; carrying; sitting; twisting; climbing and stooping; kneeling or crouching.  The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.



Completed Secondary School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months

Cook’s papers (1 year course)

Two (2) years of prior related experience, with at least one year of institutional cooking experience is required

Experience supervising volunteers

Current First Aid & CPR Certification

Current Safe Food Handler’s Certification

Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds

Strong oral and written communication skills

Good organizational skills

Self-motivated and disciplined

Ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful, and professional approach to clients

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry may be required.

Fluent French verbal & written communication skills an asset.

Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.


This is a full time position based on 40 hours per week, hours of work and work schedule are as follows 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and includes a ½ paid meal break.  Some flexibility in scheduling may be required.  


Start Date: November 27, 2017
