Do you want to make a difference? Join the world’s largest humanitarian network. The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRC), a not for profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in Canada and throughout the world, is currently seeking an Intern within the Global Relations and Humanitarian Diplomacy (GR&HD) Unit at the National Office in Ottawa.

The GR&HD team is committed to engaging Canadians, especially youth, in humanitarian issues. In line with this, we offer limited unpaid internship positions for undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates to gain experience in a professional office environment. Students participating in the internship program are involved in professional projects, assignments and activities during their tenure with assigned staff. These internships are not aligned with paid employment at the CRC following the internship.

There is currently one internship position available for the winter term (January to April); 16 weeks. A modest honorarium will be provided upon completion of the internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will assist team members in:

  • Conducting research and preparing written briefs on humanitarian issues and trends.
  • Supporting the Unit and the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Network with event preparation and with the development of communication materials.
  • Providing extra note-taking and administrative capacity.
  • Fulfilling other tasks based on the needs of the team.

Students must commit to a minimum of 21 hours of work per week. Where possible, attempts will be made to align the nature of the internship with the background, studies and interests of the successful candidate. Like all members of the GR&HD team, applicants must be prepared to take on their fair share of administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will have a strong record of academic achievement, a sense of professionalism, as well as a demonstrated commitment to humanitarianism. Please note that while it’s not a requirement, preference will be given to youth currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic program who can apply the internship toward course credit or their studies in general.

Other specific qualifications include:

  • Candidates must be currently completing or have completed post-secondary education in a related area (i.e. law, policy, international development or affairs, conflict studies, etc.).
  • Strong research and written communication skills in English (French is an asset).
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team but also independently on projects.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

SELECTION CRITERIA/PROCESS:

Applications are evaluated based on their academic background and work/volunteer experience. The Unit will select applicants who best suit the project goals for the internship assignment period.
