Cornerstone Community Association provides supports and housing for homeless and hard-to-house individuals in a variety of different housing settings. Working closely with the maintenance supervisor and reporting to the Program Director, the duties of the Maintenance Coordinator/Worker are to plan, implement, oversee and document all maintenance work at Cornerstone.


Location:  Work locations are 133 Simcoe Street South, 454 Bloor Street East, 121 Simcoe St. South.


Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, weekdays with some flexibility required related to special maintenance projects and on-call work


Physical Demands:   Standing, walking, sitting, lifting (50lbs), bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, reaching, keyboarding, climbing stairs and ladders 


Environment: Institutional setting, Emergency Shelter facility, Federal Corrections, Community Outreach, and Housing Programs


Department: Maintenance and Cleaning


Qualifications:  This position requires an individual with post-secondary education related to building maintenance and/or equivalent work experience in a fast paced environment and strong skills in the areas of plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance. An understanding of the issues of vulnerable populations is an asset.


 Other Requirements:


  • Must have a reliable vehicle, and be insurable for Agency vehicle
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and be sensitive to issues of homelessness
  • Strong decision making skills and ability to work independently
  • Extensive knowledge of all areas of maintenance
  • Ability to pass and maintain Criminal Background Check
  • Computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance systems
  • Detail oriented with well-developed organizational and time management skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, interacting with all levels of the organization as well as external consultants, suppliers, and contractors
  • Self-motivated team player with demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Be familiar with general building code requirements
  • Ability to read drawings and blue prints would be an asset
  • Experience in non-profit housing an asset


Working closely with the Maintenance Supervisor the Maintenance Coordinator will:


Key Duties and Responsibilities:  



  • Liaise with manufacturers, suppliers and consultants as needed
  • Encourage tenant participation in partnership related to maintenance work and planning issues within their living units and affirm and acknowledge tenant involvement with this
  • Represent Cornerstone in a professional manner at community events or meetings as assigned
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, consultants  
  • Develop and maintain a strong team approach with staff
  •  Work closely with other Programs to ensure that all maintenance issues are managed in a timely fashion
  • Assume rotational on-call responsibilities
  • Source materials and services as required
  • Recommend and purchase supplies, tools and equipment as required
  • Schedule and oversee all fire, mechanical and safety systems training for staff
  • Oversee regular inspections and maintenance for Agency vehicle
  • In conjunction with Administrative and Maintenance staff, perform inspections of units and common areas as required
  • Trouble shoot after hours maintenance issues when necessary
  • Conduct  annual review of all mechanical and service contractors and recommend alternatives as necessary to Executive Director
  • Work with maintenance staff in the completion of daily duties as required
  • Be proactive in assessing and recommending maintenance and building needs for the future planning
  • Maintain a knowledge of current environmental or Green building practices
  • Adhere to all Cornerstone Policies and Procedures
  • Perform repairs to units as needed and directed
  • Other duties as assigned


Coordination and Administration

  • Maintain a computerized Maintenance Management System and replenish inventory stock as required
  • Update the Maintenance Management System with current supplier and inventory information
  • Assist with monitoring annual budget 
  • Manage, schedule, assign, and validate completion of work orders and preventative maintenance tasks
  • Assist supervisor to Train, supervise, monitor, and evaluate staff as well as developing shift schedules
  • Assist to Supervise temporary labourers as required
  • Maintain individual records and files for staff and maintenance requirements
  • Ensure that best practice standards and procedures are met and maintained
  • Assist supervisor in annual review of Program policy manuals related to maintenance policies and procedures
  • Prepare reports and comprehensive cost comparison proposals as required and submit recommendations to supervisor
  • Schedule, oversee and maintain logs as required for fire and Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) inspections
  • Work with Accounting staff to confirm payables
  • Demonstrate due diligence in ensuring the overall safety of the clients, staff and volunteers, as well as observe and adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Legislation in the workplace and document any concerns
  • Adhere to all Cornerstone Policies and Procedures
  • Other duties as assigned.
