POSITION:     Mobile Shelter Case Worker                                    1 Full Time Temporary – Riverside Winter Shelter

SALARY: $21.85 per hour (as per the Collective Agreement)



  • Saturday through Wednesday
  • Shift times rotate Sat/Sun 07:00 to 15:00 hrs and Mon to Wed 07:30 to 15:30 hrs
  • Shifts are 7.5 hours in length
  • Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice
  • Probationary/ qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews.


The Mobile Shelter Case Worker reports to the Site Manager or designate and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society including following Lookout’s Code of Ethics. The worker carries out a variety of duties related to supporting clients while at an emergency shelter including assessments of needs, providing support that meets the crisis needs of clients entering the shelter including, but not limited to developing a plan of action, being an advocate for the client, arranging for the provision of housing, food, clothing, services and support toward solutions of issues that have rendered them homeless. The worker deals with the public, other service agencies and professionals involved in the support of the clients.


JOB DUTIES: (in brief)

  • Provides assistance to clients through methods such as identifying and discussing problems; developing with the client a flexible plan of action to ensure basic needs are met
  • Assist guests with identifying and assessing needs/issues and developing a flexible plan of action to ensure basic requirements are met; may relate to housing, food, health, legal, financial, and other needs.
  • Follow up on immediate client crisis support. Will make referrals and liaise with support agencies or groups, to obtain services for clients who are experiencing difficulty or denial of services.
  • Will provide transportation to and from appointments and referrals.
  • Provide other related on-site services
  • Complete required records and maintain statistical data
  • Support others in the shelter who need assistance
  • Provide assistance for new staff  


  • Related Diploma or Certificate or minimum Grade 12 education, plus three (3) years of recent related experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Familiarity with community resources, particularly addiction, mental health, welfare and harm reduction.
  • Must have current OFA 1 First Aid Certificate
  • Must have Class 4 Drivers’ License and Drivers’ Abstract
  • Reliable vehicle – insured for Business Use
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training an asset
  • Demonstrated Case Planning skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Strong ability to manage stress and organize workload
  • Excellent communication, writing and documentation and organizational skills.
  • Understands and maintain clientele/worker boundaries
  • Ability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse environment
  • Strong physical and mental ability to perform work tasks and operate job related equipment.
  • A minimum of two (2) years sobriety if you have had concerns related to alcohol and/or drug use.
  • Criminal Record Clearance – vulnerable sector
