Matthew’s House provides temporary care for children with complex health care needs in a well-equipped and home-like environment, giving parents a chance to rest.

 

Job Summary

This position supports children in a respite care setting, providing individualized quality care while implementing the philosophy and values of Communitas. The residential support worker ensures that physical and emotional needs are met in a fun, home-like environment.

 

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide assistance in areas such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care and implementation of health care plan goals and objectives
  • Assist children with activities such as eating, lifts, transfers, hygiene, grooming and toileting. Identify potential problems and reporting any difficulties
  • Administer medication and g-tube feeds to children in accordance with established policy
  • Assist in implementing behavioral support strategies
  • Follow all protocols as required (e.g. medical, nutritional, Behavioral, crisis intervention, emergency procedures, etc.)
  • Use established infection control techniques as required to prevent and control the spread of infection
  • Participate in the implementation of a recreational program designed to meet the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the children
  • Participate in planning special events such as Christmas, Easter, and Valentine’s Day
  • Communicate effectively with other support staff to ensure continuity in activities and routines. Ensure that Health Care and Behavioral information is effectively communicated to the team
  • Consciously think about and promote better ways of supporting the children during their respite stay
  • Establish and maintain good interpersonal relations with children, families, staff, visitors and volunteers
  • Participate in training/orientation of new staff
  • Complete daily communication book, journals, and other documentation such as charts and incident reports in accordance with established policy
  • Maintain the confidentiality of client file information
  • Participate in all program staff meetings
  • Attends work related in-services as required by Communitas
  • Other duties as assigned (e.g. administrative duties, extra cleaning, etc.)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Community Support Worker certificate or approved equivalent
  • Experience with Autism and Behavioral supports is an asset
  • Pediatric experience and/or experience working with various disabilities will be an asset
  • A philosophy of service that is in line with Communitas’ Vision, Mission and Values
  • Familiar with and able to implement “Spirit of Gentleness” principles
  • Ability to take initiative with creativity
  • A good sense of humor and the ability to interact with the children in a lighthearted way
  • Excellent teamwork skills, ability to maintain honest, direct and respectful relationships
  • Ability to receive direction as well as being able to work independently without supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Possession of a valid Class 4 BC drivers license (unrestricted)
  • Possession of a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate with CPR (must maintain valid certification)
  • Possession of Food Safe Certificate
