Diversion Worker, 828-HOPE

Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary is a leading provider of quality programs to children and youth, with a $20 million dollar operating budget, that supports the healthy physical, educational and social development for 20,000 young people and their families each year.

 

828-HOPE is a centralized referral service for youth and agencies supporting youth in need of housing and basic needs support.  828-HOPE provides youth with timely support to end their time on the streets including: information about and referral to youth housing programs in Calgary, assistance in applying for supports related to housing (e.g., Red Cross Emergency Fund, rent assistance), support to avoid eviction, and support to prevent future incidences of homelessness and the issues related to homelessness (criminal activity, fines, poor health) that impact front-line policing.

 

As a Diversion Worker with 828-HOPE, a typical day might include:

  • Providing individual and family coaching, assessment, and advocacy to youth aged 12-24 who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness due to breakdown with family and natural supports
  • Collaboratively working with other agencies and community groups to identify ways youth and families can improve communication, access resources and strengthen relationships.
  • Ensures the inclusion of appropriate supports in case planning
  • Ensures that all documentation is kept current, complete and professional and conveys pertinent information regarding youth and their families to the team in a timely manner.
  • Promotes relationships that foster resiliency, responsibility and independence.
  • Gain understanding of the family and social context as well as assist the family in recognizing possible supports available.  
  • Support the family/natural supports to explore and discover their individual family culture and collective strengths
  • Acts as a liaison between families, social workers, school representatives, doctors and other professionals involved with the youth and their supports to promote the self-sufficiency.

You Have:

  • Bachelors of Human Services preferred or a related degree with experience.
  • Must have 2-3 years of experience working specifically with families experiencing challenges with adolescents and 5 years of experience working with high risk, street involved and homeless youth 
  • An understanding of the homeless sector in Calgary, Calgary’s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness and Plan to End Youth Homelessness in Calgary
  • Possess knowledge of Child and Family Services and the Family Enhancement Act.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, problem solving, organizing, planning and analytical skills.
  • Current First Aid and CPR and clear security clearances
  • Use of a reliable vehicle with $1,000,000 liability, permission to carry passengers and business coverage on the vehicle.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driver’s abstract with minimal demerits.
