The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.




Reporting to the Director of Program, the Reintegration Chaplain will possess a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of Restorative Justice and Social Justice. This will also include an understanding of the individual and systemic issues of poverty. They will possess an innovative spirit that seeks to use their knowledge and creativity to develop and implement programs that provide support to inmates, ex-inmates and those impacted by incarceration.


The candidate must also excel at working within a multidisciplinary team as well as have the ability to work effectively and provide leadership to volunteers. Similarly, they will be able to work effectively in an ecumenical and interfaith context. The Reintegration Chaplain will demonstrate a passion to serve God and acknowledge the intrinsic value of all people despite their circumstances. They will possess a ‘teachable spirit’ and a pattern of life-long learning. They will display strong leadership skills with an emphasis on empowering others.



  • Develop an overarching ministry action plan for the provision of spiritual care to those who have been impacted by incarceration.
    • Form relationships with those impacted by incarceration, both individually and in groups
    • Ensure that The Mustard Seed fulfills its contractual obligations to the Correctional Services of Canada.
  • In partnership with a passionate team of volunteers and staff,
    • Develop and follow up on Spiritual Care Assessments and Spiritual Care Plans
    • Facilitate the involvement, support and supervision of volunteers, students and the faith community in a ministry to those whose lives have been impacted by incarceration
    • Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of our spiritual care
  • As a member of the wider Mustard Seed family,
    • Understand the services that different agencies and congregations within the community offer to those they serve and how they can benefit from these resources
    • Work collaboratively with other departments of The Mustard Seed, neighbouring agencies, and congregations to provide comprehensive care for those impacted by incarceration
    • Completion and submission of monthly, quarterly and annual reports as required by The Mustard Seed and other external funders
    • Attend meetings and training, as assigned
    • Serve on internal and external committees, as approved


  • Degree/Diploma in Christian ministry preparation or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years in pastoral ministry
  • Ecclesiastical Status
  • Ordination or equivalent by a Canadian credentialing body
  • A member in good standing of a local faith community
  • Demonstrated ability to grow programs and develop new initiatives
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team
  • Ability to accomplish goals with minimal supervision
  • Strong networking and system navigation abilities required
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office Programs (i.e., Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)


  • Full-time position, requiring afternoon, evenings and weekend hours as necessary
  • Office space will be provided

  • Employment Security Check and pass an Enhanced Security clearance by Correctional Service Canada
