Certified Teacher - Environmental Educator
Job Posted: Thursday, 23 November 2017

(in 19 days)
Oak and Orca Bioregional School
Region: Vancouver Island & Coastal areas Type: Full time
Location: Victoria Salary: (not entered)

Oak and Orca Bioregional School is currently seeking a BC certified teacher to work with home-learning students as well as teach workshops at our on-site school in Victoria. Our school community is a vibrant, loving, complex and utterly unique workplace that combines the vibes of a nonprofit with the vibes of a certified alternative school.  We are also accepting applications for non-certified educators in a slightly different role.

We are committed to providing quality programs with an environmental perspective and choices for children. We provide programs both to home schooling children all over BC and to students who attend our small school site in Victoria. Teachers work with students to help them learn how to learn, encouraging them to be self-directed and self-motivated. We value ecological literacy and a holistic view of education. Ability to work with a diversity of ages is key, as our programs include home-learners from kindergarten to high school and on-site students ages 3 to 18.

Staff members work together as a community. Teachers fill in for others as needed, assist with basic school maintenance and clean-up, and take responsibility for programs such before and after school care, fundraising, community projects, and field trips. All teachers model a bioregional lifestyle and bike, bus or walk to work. While we can't offer the benefits of a public school position, we can offer a place to work that is supportive of your drive to teach in unique and exciting ways and to be learning all the time with your students.

The ideal candidate will be a BC certified teacher with experience working with multi-aged groups in a child-led learning environment, an understanding of bioregionalism, knowledge of non-violent communication and conflict resolution, an enthusiasm for modelling ecological and socially responsible choices, a desire to support both at-school students and home learners, and a willingness to learn and be mentored. Cycling experience and other specialized knowledge (wilderness skills, creative arts, sciences, ecology, mathematics, martial arts, First Nations or international perspectives…) are assets.

If you have an interest in quality learning, based on what the kids are interested in - that is what you'll find at Oak and Orca.
