UNYA has 1 full time position available for Youth Care Counsellor/Transition Worker based out of our Aboriginal Safehouse.  The Aboriginal Safehouse (ASH) is a voluntary short-term residential program for youth between the ages of 16-18 of any and all backgrounds who do not have a safe place to stay.   ASH provides a supportive, non-judgmental place where youth are supported 24-7 in making positive changes in their lives.  We strive to support their mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being.  The Transition Worker would work with other Safehouse Staff and youth to help achieve targeted goals such as obtaining housing, employment, attending ICM’s, engaging with UNYA and other resources, etc.  The usual hours of work will be Sundays – Thursdays, 11am – 7pm (40 hours/week), however, a highly flexible schedule will be maintained in order to meet the needs of the youth.  This position reports directly to both the Manager and the Assistant Manager of the Aboriginal Safehouse.

 

Qualifications and Conditions:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • 2 years of recent related experience.
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of the following modalities:
    • Culture as Therapy
    • Person Centered Approach
    • Family Systems Approach
    • Trauma Informed Approach.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and working effectively with Native youth.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the intergenerational impacts of the residential school systems, colonization, the Native Community, and an understanding and willingness to participate in Native protocols, practices, and ceremonies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues, addiction issues, concurrent disorders, and FASD.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License, and a satisfactory driving abstract.
  • Reliable, safe vehicle.
  • First Aid.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • Given the needs of youth accessing our services, preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal applicants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Gather information related to each youth through established interviewing techniques and questionnaires, observing the youth, and soliciting information from family and other professionals involved with the youth.  Evaluate information, and with the youth, MCFD, and other professional supports, develop and implement a care-plan. 
  2. Ensure care-plan meets each youth’s mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional needs including but not limited to the areas of culture, safety, finance, housing, education, social, support, and recreation.
  3. Implement care-plans and intervention strategies using a variety of techniques, such as the Person Centered Approach, Family Systems Approach, and Trauma Informed Approach.  Provide informal one-on-one counselling and group counselling as required. 
  4. Provide case management services and monitor youth’s progress; reassess care-plans on an ongoing basis to ensure youth are fully supported. 
  5. Provide skill development and education in areas such as looking for housing and employment, budgeting, diet planning, communication skills, conflict resolution, self-management, parenting, etc.
  6. Ensure that all members of a youth’s professional team are kept up-to-date on effectiveness of the care-plan, youth’s progress, any new issues or trends, and any behaviour changes.
  7. Create a safe space for all youth and staff by responding to behaviours and situations through a trauma informed lens, modelling respectful behaviour, and through thoughtful and fun interactions with staff and youth.
  8. Demonstrate commitment to the team as a positive, active participant who treats others in a respectful and supportive manner, communicates constructively, listens actively, shares openly, cooperates, exhibits flexibility, demonstrates reliability, and helps the team by working together to solve problems.
  9. Establish and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other UNYA programs and other community programs/resources to ensure effective referrals and enhance access to a strong continuum of supports.  Ensure that youth are being referred to appropriate services in the community, as individual needs require.  Provide information, advocacy, and support in the referral process for internal and external programs, as well as other supports in the community.
  10. Maintain appropriate statistical records, logs, case files, and client reports in order to meet both UNYA and its funder’s requirements.
  11. Maintain sound financial and office management.  Oversee and monitor position expenditures, ensuring that the position remains within its allocated budgets.  Prepare and submit financial reports as required.
  12. Positively and proactively address any concerns, incidents, or crises which affect youth participants, program operation and mandate, UNYA policies, and community relations.
  13. Respect and assure youth participants’ confidentiality in the community and with other service professionals.  Respect and maintain the confidentiality of staff issues within the team, with the exception of UNYA Management.
  14. Adhere to UNYA’s Philosophy of Care, and all program-specific and organization-wide policies and procedures.
  15. Keep abreast of current social concerns and street trends, and as required, attend professional development activities in order to remain informed regarding issues affecting street-involved youth. 
  16. Consult with and report to the ASH Manager on a regular basis for ongoing assessment and refinement of the program. 
  17. Perform any other duty deemed necessary by the ASH Manager to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operation of the Safehouse Program.
