Settlement Youth Worker


The Cowichan Intercultural Society is a Canadian registered charitable organization that has been operating in the Cowichan Valley Region for over 35 years. Cowichan Intercultural Society provides services and support to newcomers to Canada settling in the Cowichan Valley, and activities to create a more welcoming and inclusive community.
The Settlement Youth Worker provides settlement and integration services to immigrant and refugee children and youth through needs assessment, orientation, information, referrals and advocacy.


The ideal candidate will have:


- a sensitivity for intercultural and inclusive communities

- excellence in English verbal, written and interpersonal communications

- fluency in a language other than English

- a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

- ability to work flexible hours

- experience with non-profit organizations and structure

- ability to work closely with a team

- ability to exercise discretion for client confidentiality 

- ability to share vision and mission and engage others in support of CIS

- completed related professional courses on settlement-related themes (immigration and refugee studies, social work, anthropology)

- diploma in a related field (child and youth care preferred) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

- one to three years of previous work experience in a similar environment (social services, non-profit organization) and experience working with children and youth from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds - experience working with immigrants and/or refugees

- knowledge of community resources

- First Aid Certification


This position is up to 30 hour per week* and requires flexibility of scheduling. The position is a fixed term contract to March 31st, 2018. Preference is given to youth applicants.
Salary range is $18 -21 / hour. *If eligible and accepted for the Get Youth Working Grant

Job Description – Youth Worker
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Client Service (95%):


- Plan, organize and facilitate workshops and courses on topics relevant to settlement and integration of children and youth.

- Identify, access and refer appropriately to other CIS programming and other children and youth community services and resources.

- Create settlement plans with clients to reflect clients’ needs for short-term or long-term interventions.

- Establish and maintain working relationships with other service providers.

- Provide culturally-sensitive problem-solving assistance to clients.

- Contribute to overall settlement program planning and implementation, working closely as part of the settlement team. - Work sensitively, with an understanding of intercultural family dynamics and generational settlement issues.

- Work with empathy, using crisis intervention skills and an ability to work with individuals and families who may be experiencing discrimination, racism and culture shock.

- Work effectively with an interpreter when necessary.

Reporting and Accountability (5%):


- Use of reporting & client management databases, including appropriate case notes

- Regular reporting to Settlement Team members and ED

- Remain current on system requirements and security & privacy requirements

- Reach or exceed required targets
