Job Purpose:

Streetworks is a Harm Reduction, health promotion, primary health care program, which is currently seeking Registered Nurses to deliver supervised injection services, supervising and supporting individuals in the self-administration of pre-obtained substances by injection.

 

With the assistance of an Addiction Counsellor/Social Worker or LPN (location dependent) and Harm Reduction Support Workers, the RN will collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and other healthcare and service providers to deliver a client-centered, trauma-informed approach to care. The role includes providing comprehensive physical and mental health assessments, delivery of harm reduction supplies, supervised injection clinical interventions and education, take home naloxone distribution, sexual health and other health education and support, and referrals to other health & social services. Other duties may include immunizations, distribution of safer sex and drug use supplies, and basic wound care.

 

*RN-involved Streetworks Supervised Injection Services are offered at Boyle Street Community Services and the George Spady Society.

 

There are full time, part time, and relief positions working days, evenings, or weekends.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures all operations of the SIS comply with Health Canada’s exemption requirements and guidelines, in collaboration with the SIS Program Manager and Executive Director.
  • Takes the leadership role in overseeing the day-to-day operations including administrative, supervisory, and other related duties of the SIS in collaboration with the SIS staff.
  • Completes pre-injection, post-injection assessments and monitors individuals’ health for the duration of the SIS visit, assisting other SIS staff with assessment and documentation standards as required, for all operational activities.
  • Initiates and directs overdose and other emergency responses for all SIS staff when necessary (g. naloxone, oxygen, ventilation, CPR), as per established protocols.
  • Works collaboratively with individuals, health care professionals and community services in the identification and resolution of health issues and integration of care, making referrals to other service providers as appropriate.
  • Oversees case management/coordination of care to SIS individuals, as required.
  • Provides basic abscess and wound care related to injection drug use, blood-borne pathogens and sexually transmitted infections (BBPSTI), pregnancy testing and immunizations, and discusses and addresses other emerging medical issues as required.
  • Using a harm reduction approach, provides education and counselling on overdose prevention, safer injection techniques, substance use, sexual health and other high-risk behaviors.
  • Takes the leadership role in assisting management with policy development, research and evaluation, and quality improvement, as required.
  • Maintains standards of nursing practice and develops professional competence through training and educational opportunities, as required by the employer and regulatory body.
  • With the support of other team members, ensures that every individual involved in activities with illicit substances complies with the exemption requirements, in accordance with Health Canada’s terms and conditions.
  • Provides an ongoing commitment to individuals within the SIS and continuously strives for the most effective and appropriate delivery of care.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, current registration with CARNA
  • Current CPR certification.

Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:

  • Able to work non-judgmentally with all individuals presenting to the Supervised Injection Services. within a Harm Reduction framework
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and make independent decisions
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
  • Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn of substance use and culture, mental health, STIs and blood borne pathogens and inner-city lifestyles
  • Knowledge of or experience with STI testing and treatment, and in providing immunizations
  • Knowledge of and experience in community development
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in an Indigenous cultural context
  • Familiarity with local community resources (e.g. substance use, social services, justice)
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting
  • Ability to work in partnership with other organizations
  • Flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and non-judgmental attitude
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-directed
  • Ability to plan and execute evaluation activities

Experience:

  • Experience working in a marginalized city community is an asset
