The Alma Mater Society of UBC is a non-profit organization that is committed to serving the student body of UBC. Our mission statement is to improve the quality of the educational, social, and personal lives of the students of UBC Vancouver . We operate out of the NEST building located right in the heart of the Point Grey Campus. We run 9 food establishments and a Conferences & Catering operation, which generate revenue to support our student programs and initiatives.


The Facilities Manager will be responsible for the appearance and maintenance of the AMS Student Nest Facility; overseeing the First Aid and Building Operations departments. This role will be the main point of contact for all external clients including AMS lessees, UBC plant operations, UBC campus security and the UBC RCMP detachment. This role requires an individual with excellent leadership skills and ideally has a background in facility management or construction and renovation work to manage, direct and enforce policy/rules/regulations pertaining to the AMS and its legal entities. The Facilities Manager will be responsible for directing, planning and coordinating essential services such as reception, maintenance, cleaning, waste disposal and recycling. The ideal candidate is a hands-on-manager leading by example and building strong working relationships with all departments, services and customers in and around the AMS Student Nest


Duties and Responsibilities of the Facilities Manager

  • Ensuring the proper operation of facilities departments, including first aid and workshop services, providing proper reporting, staffing and training.
  • Coordinating building maintenance and repairs that affect normal building operation
  • Project managing, supervising and coordinating the work of contractors and revising work at project conclusion
  • Performing daily checks of the facility
  • Acting as the official AMS liaison between UBC plant operations, AMS lessees, UBC campus security, UBC RCMP detachment and other entities as they arise
  • Human Resources responsibilities such as but not limited to: hiring, scheduling, training, mentoring, developing, evaluating, disciplining (including termination) staff
  • Actively managing and monitoring labor cost and expenses to meet budget expectations
  • Assessing, developing and enforcing staff manuals and policies with approval of senior management
  • Actively participating in the Health & Safety Committee
  • Ensuring that the building meets health and safety requirements and that facilities comply with legislation
  • Developing, implementing and executing facility emergency response plans
  • Overseeing pest control
  • Providing stakeholders with updates of electrical, water and other service outages and scheduled shutdowns
  • Assisting emergency response teams during evacuations in assessing building conditions, locating missing personnel, shutting off utilities and delivering status reports to muster station leaders
  • Budget planning as directed by the Senior Manager of Operations
  • Acting as official AMS liaison for AMS Events in collaboration with AMS Events Manager
  • Administrating of the Emergency Response Plan(s)
  • Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Shift work (daytime, evenings and weekends)
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience of the Facilities Manager

  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience, (preferably in a multi-tenant or educational environment) or combination of equivalent education and work experience is required
  • Clean Criminal Record Check
  • Experience participating or chairing a Health and Safety Committee
  • Valid Occupational First Aid level 2 or higher Certification (OFA2) an asset
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment, multi-task and delegate work appropriately to staff
  • Intermediate skills in computer usage including Microsoft Office products
  • Available to work varied shifts in response to facility needs
  • Valid BC driver’s license
  • Language: Required to speak, read and write English, with fluency in other languages being an asset
