Youth Residential Worker

On Call Auxiliary

Location: Surrey

We are looking for a Youth Residential Worker to work with adolescent self-identifying Aboriginal young women who are in conflict with the law. The program is staffed on an awake around the clock model and participants live in for 5 months while they participate in a number of educational and healing objectives. The program philosophy is one of self-direction and independence, with individual treatment and goal planning focusing on developing a variety of coping skills and self-reliance. A gender focused curriculum is used based upon the work of Stephanie Covington and traditional teachings. The program is supported by a clinical counsellor who provides individualized counselling and a local elder. Our ideal candidate is herself Aboriginal.

 

Primary Purpose:

To establish rapport with the young women and ensure their safety and wellbeing on a daily basis through providing support, leading group activities, and participating in case management.  While at work you will “live with” the young women and engage in a shared cooperative model with staff and residents to care for the home, conduct daily living activities, and engage in educational and healing focused activities that support the wellbeing of young women. You will work within a team model to support participants’ personal objectives and goals.

 

Key Duties/Accountabilities:

To provide young women with a positive group living environment in which they can plan for their futures and look after themselves. You are responsible for the overall manage and functioning of the program while on duty within the established guidelines and policies of EFry.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Two year diploma in Child and Youth Counselling with a further 2 years of education or a 4 year degree with studies related to Child and Youth Counseling, Youth in conflict, Developmental Psych, and/or Family System
  • Minimum of 6 months working in residential environment; with a strong preference for working with Aboriginal children or youth
  • WCB Level One First Aid, Food Safe Certificate

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of issues linked to youth coming in conflict with the law or entering state care
  • Gender specific knowledge of issues related to substance misuse, violence, oppression, and pathways to homelessness and criminal justice involvement
  • Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others
  • Strong communications skills (written and oral)
