Salary:                                    $90.80-$94.40/day – dependent on position and experience

Term:                                     June 23, 2018 – August 24, 2018 OR September 1, 2018 depending on position

All positions work 6 days/week

Out-Trippers – June 18 to August 24, 2018 (Must be 19+ by July 1, 2018)

Nature & Scope:

 

Program team members are highly committed and flexible staff members responsible for instructing camp activities and supporting other staff in delivering programs, supervising campers, assisting in logistics, completing camp duties on first and last days, and providing care and maintenance of program areas and equipment.

 

Specific Program Staff:

 

Challenge Course/Rock Climbing Instructor – The Challenge Course/Rock Climbing Instructors are responsible for executing all aspects of the challenge course program, including and maintaining all challenge course equipment, ensuring that all programs are meeting risk management standards and delivering an experiential, camper focused experience.

 

Out-Trippers – Out-Trippers are responsible for executing a caper focused out-tripping program that meets BCCA and YMCA risk management standards. Out-tripping instructors will work with the Out-Trip Section Leader to ensure that all tripping equipment is properly maintained and in safe working order.  Out-trippers will plan, prepare and lead 1-8 day canoe trips in Howe Sound and Desolation Sound, ensuring that Leave No Trace principles are followed and taught on-trip, and are responsible for the overall safety and experience of both campers and staff. Out-trippers must be 19 or older by July 1, 2018.

 

Arts & Crafts Instructor – The Arts & Craft Instructor is responsible for designing and facilitating high quality Arts & Crafts programs using a variety of mediums while taking advantage of the spectacular natural setting of Camp Elphinstone. The Arts & Crafts Instructor will engage campers to foster their creativity and will focus on integrating exciting and novel arts and crafts projects into Camp Programs.

 

Camp Craft Instructor – The Camp Craft Instructor engages campers in natural history with hands-on and exciting skills and activities. Camp Craft Instructors leads and supervises activities including the following: Exciting and empowering explorations of the wilderness, edible wilds, making toys and tools with wild material, building sure-fire tinder-bundles, natural fire-making, walking stick carving, making natural tea, and baking out trip foods such as bannock. The Camp Craft Instructor must possess hands-on skills at teaching innovative and nature based crafts and knowledge of the local natural history and ecology. Previous experience as a camp counsellor and certification or workshops in natural history such as Interpretive Guides Association an asset.

 

Camp Photographer/Instructor – The photographer Instructor is responsible for instructing camper-focused, child friendly photography lessons in interest groups each afternoon, as well as acting as the camp photographer, taking daily professional photos for use in YMCA social media, promotional materials, and key stakeholders. This person is responsible for uploading photos to our camp photo system Smug Mug on a daily basis. Experience in photography and working with youth required.

 

Lifeguard – Lifeguards are responsible for the safety and positive experience of all campers and staff on the waterfront and ensure swimming and boating activities meet BCCA and YMCA standards.  The waterfront is one the focal points of Camp Elphinstone and lifeguards are required to positively role model, teach and politely enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers and staff. A preference will be given to Lifesaving Instructors with the ability to teach Bronze Cross/Bronze Medallion.

 

Kayaking Instructor – Is responsible for the designing and facilitating of safe, engaging, camper focused kayak lessons. The waterfront is one of the focal points at Camp Elphinstone and the Kayaking Instructor is expected to infuse crating programming into free time and structured activities and to ensure the program meets BCCA standards while working closely with the waterfront team to ensure that the waterfront delivers exceptional camper-focused programs. Kayaking Instructors are required to positively role model and politely enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers and staff.. NLS, Pleasure Craft Operators License and Paddle Canada Certification Required.

 

Canoe Instructor – Is responsible for designing and facilitating safe, engaging, and camper-focused canoe lessons. The waterfront is one of the focal points of Camp Elphinstone and the canoeing instructor is expected to infuse creative programming into free time and structured activities and to ensure the program meets BCCA standards while working closely with the waterfront team to ensure that the waterfront delivers exceptional camper focused programs. Canoe Instructors are required to positively role model and politely enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers and staff. NLS, Pleasure Craft Operators License and Paddle Canada Certification Required.

 

Sailing Instructors – are responsible for designing and facilitating safe, engaging, and camper-focused sailing lessons. The waterfront is one of the focal points of Camp Elphinstone and the sailing instructors are expected and to ensure the program meets BCCA standards while working closely with the waterfront team to ensure that the waterfront delivers exceptional camper focused programs. Sailing Instructors are required to positively role model and politely enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers and staff. During sailing camp sessions, this person may be required to live in a cabin with another group leader and up to 10 campers, ensuring emotional and physical safety for all. CANSail Instructor and Pleasure Craft Operators License required.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Role modeling appropriate behavior and the core values of the YMCA
  • Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff
  • Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with staff, children, and families
  • Interact directly with children and encourage interaction between children
  • Create and maintain a positive atmosphere and build positive self-esteem and confidence in children
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of safe and fun YMCA Child & Youth programs in accordance with YMCA standards, YMCA Child Protection policies, and YMCA Healthy Child Development principles
  • Maintain a neat, orderly, and clean environment, including all living areas, program areas, and common spaces
  • Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills
  • Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required
  • Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed
  • Provide behavior management and general camper care assistance whenever possible
  • Act as a role model at all times providing leadership and guidance to younger staff as well as campers
  • Instruct the skills of the specific area to the campers and staff, provide certifications to campers if applicable
  • Be available and enthusiastic to assist in camp-wide programming and camper care at any time
  • Assist in camper care by sleeping in cabins to provide 24 hour supervision from time to time if needed
  • Perform a regular checks of all equipment in area to ensure they are in good, working order
  • Keep all logs and paperwork up to date, reporting any deficiencies to the appropriate people
  • Ensure that programs are conducted in keeping with YMCA policies and practices Ensure that all programs meet the standards outlined in the BCCA accreditation standards
  • Protect the assets of the YMCA through proper instruction and appropriate use 

 

The Program Staff may be required to assist in duties not listed above.  The YMCA expects the support of all staff members in fulfilling objectives that may not be specific to this position

 

Requirements: 

  • Attend YMCA Camps Staff Training
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Bronze Cross (NLS Preferred)
  • Waterfront (Lifeguard, Kayak, Canoe, Sailing) – NLS (LSI and Asset), Pleasure Craft Operators License, Respective Certification in: Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing (i.e. Paddle Canada, Can Sail 1-4 instructor)
  • Challenge Course/Rock Climbing Instructor – ACCT Level 2 Challenge Course Practitioner
  • Outtripper – Age 19+ by July 1, 2018, NLS, Advanced Wilderness First Aid (40+ hour Course), Food Safe Level 1, OCC or Paddle Canada Certification an asset
