YMCA Camp Elphinstone is located on the Sunshine Coast near Gibsons, a 40 minute ferry ride from Vancouver. It offers wonderful one-week, two-week and three-week camping adventures for campers 5-17 years old. Camp Elphinstone is committed to the personal development of individual campers through the cabin group process and individual choice activities, waterfront and land based activities and out trips. Camp Elphinstone is home to campers from around the world as well as the Lower Mainland.


Successful Camp Elphinstone staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to serve and develop children and youth in a camp setting. They demonstrate positive values, are highly skilled, flexible and can commit to the full camp season. Ability to functionally communicate in a second language such as Spanish, Korean, Japanese or Chinese is desirable for some positions. The Sunshine Coast is a vibrant community committed to natural environments, sustainability and the arts. Housing on site at Camp Elphinstone is a requirement of the position.


Nature & Scope: 

The Outdoor Education Director will provide year round leadership to YMCA Outdoor Education operations at YMCA Camp Elphinstone, ensuring our programs and services deliver on our vision of building a community in which a generation of children and families can reach their full potential.


Reporting to the Manager, the Outdoor Education Director will be responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with clients including schools, rental groups, and families; leading a strong staff team; the development and implementation of high quality experiential education programming; reviewing and updating systems and ongoing risk management and crisis response, ensuring adherence to YMCA policies and procedures.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Onsite supervision of all operations during operating seasons
  • Provide leadership as an active member of the YMCA Camp Elphinstone Leadership team
  • Recruitment, hiring, coaching and leading a team of staff and volunteers committed to building a strong, inclusive, and camper-focused culture and community
  • Develop & deliver innovative training that supports professional development of staff & volunteers
  • Develop & deliver experiential, camper-focussed outdoor programming
  • Maintain YMCA program & care standards; positively role-model YMCA mission, vision, and values
  • Ongoing risk management and crisis response following YMCA procedures
  • Develop & implement strategies that achieve & sustain program growth for Outdoor Education programs
  • Manage and meet targets in YMCA operating plans and budgets tied to Outdoor Education delivery
  • Sales and recruitment of new bookings; building and fostering positive relationship with clients and external relationships valuable to the ongoing success of YMCA Camp Elphinstone
  • Participates in and promotes YMCA charitable goals and annual campaign
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in a supervisory/management role
  • University Degree with significant experience in related field(s); education degree/teacher certification an asset
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and relationship building skills
  • Ability to multitask and remain results focused in a high demand environment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule according to operational needs
  • Strong public relations, marketing and communication skills
  • Experience with developing and implementing engagement strategies, and staff/volunteer recruitment and development
  • Valid Standard First Aid, CPR C, Class 4 Driver’s License (or willingness to obtain) required
  • NLS and Level 2 Challenge Course certifications assets
  • Experience with CLASS Operating System an asset
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
