The campus and co-op employment facilitator will support students with developmental disabilities, at their local college or university, in inclusive post-secondary education by facilitating the development of personal relationships between those students and members of the campus community, and in educational and social experiences in accordance with the learning, employment and social goals identified by the student and their families. These goals are coherent with those of regular students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a specific field of study.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

Campus Inclusion

  1. Facilitate the development of reciprocal personal relationships between the student and members of the student body at large.
  2. Assist students to orient themselves and access the campus and its facilities in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between STEPS Forward and the academic institution.
  3. Help students to identify their interests and make the best use of the educational and extracurricular opportunities offered by the university.
  4. Meet on a regular basis with the student, support faculty in modifying curriculum, adapt assignments, and assist the student in identifying meaningful educational goals.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of the students’ personal information.
  6. Increase awareness and support the University community to include the students in meaningful and reciprocal ways.
  7. Meet with peers, students, and faculty on a regular basis in order to be available to support them in addressing any issues or concerns that may arise. 
  8. Act as a positive role model at all times for the student, peers, faculty, and the campus community
  9. Assist the student or alumni in whatever tasks are required to enable them to be included - which may include some personal support.
  10. Assist the student in compiling a portfolio(s) of their university and work experiences during their studies.
  11. Facilitate families and/or advocates to be involved in their son or daughter’s university experience without breaching student confidentiality.

Co-op Employment

  1. Assist coordinator(s) to seek inclusive paid employment, which enhances self-esteem in culturally valued employment.
  2. Assist students in identifying areas of interest and opportunities on campus.
  3. Assist the student in obtaining paid work.
  4. Support students in using effective telephone and interpersonal techniques to obtain appointments with employers.
  5. Identify any job modifications that may be required for the student.
  6. Identify and facilitate natural supports in the work place (i.e., supervisors and co-workers) and meet with the employer on a regular basis.
  7. Identify and create tools that enable the student to increase skills and independence.

 

Community and Staff Development

Participate in:

  • Seminars, and events to promote awareness of inclusive post-secondary education
  • Staff retreats
  • Annual general meetings
  • Conferences
  • Provincial staff meetings

 

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in a related field preferred. Related work experience and equivalencies will be considered.
  • Prior experience an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to persons with developmental disabilities
