Compass is on a mission to make self-directed learning for young people a viable alternative to school. We are looking for a visionary person to join our staff who has entrepreneurial zeal for the mission and views this work as more than just a job. This is a new position with excellent scope both for innovative contribution to Compass, and to the field of self-directed learning in general.

 

Compass’ Education Director is, with the Board’s support, largely responsible for setting the positive tone and nurturing the vision that allows Compass to achieve its mission. The Education Director is also responsible for interviewing and managing volunteers and teachers, for taking charge of various administrative roles, and for seeking out interesting teachers and opportunities for youth aged 9-18. A strong preference will be given to people who have demonstrated a desire and ability to make things happen and who are committed to non-coercive education.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work as part of a small team while acting as leader in continuing to develop the mission and vision of Compass
  • Ability to form strong relationships with youth, volunteers, staff and parents
  • Knowledge of alternative education and the homeschooling community in particular
  • Adaptable to changing circumstances
  • Ability to take initiative and model lifelong learning
  • Ability to represent Compass in the wider community, including the media
  • Willing to authorize a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Standard First Aid with Level C CPR certification or willing to obtain by Feb. 26
  • Eligible to work in Canada

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years experience in the areas of youth and education, volunteer management, social programming and/or not-for-profit management
  • Experience in developing and implementing educational programs, with an awareness of current trends and issues
  • Passion for improving the lives of young people and a strong belief in the importance of trusting and empowering young people
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders

Assets:

  • Bilingual in French and English
  • Proven leadership abilities
  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent
  • Experience with working with youth with mental health challenges and youth from the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Detail-Oriented; Strength in implementing systems
  • Social media savvy

REPORTS TO: Compass Board of Directors

DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: Volunteers and Contract Staff

INTERFACES WITH: Program Manager, Board Members, teachers, volunteers, parents, youth and a broad range of key stakeholders

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES of this position:

 

Day to Day Operations and Youth Engagement

  • Form strong mentoring relationships with young people in accordance with Compass’ philosophy.
  • Share one or more of your passions with young people in the form of leading a class, tutorial, workshop, etc.
  • Plan, initiate, and manage innovative and effective programs/projects that seek to expand the impact and expertise of Compass
  • Interview, approve, and train volunteers and paid teachers to offer compelling programming at Compass
  • Develop forms, templates, and checklists and monitor and refine tools and requirements to ensure that all staff receive training in key areas of program expertise and capacity that respond to the changing context of Compass
  • Develop, facilitate and/or directly deliver staff training and orientation including maintaining effective communication with all volunteers, identifying signposts and patterns of teaching successes/difficulties, developing, monitoring and modeling teacher’s role
  • Provide assistance for the development of member feedback
  • Reports to the Board of Directors on progress and needs with regard to Compass programs

 

Reporting

  • Monitor program effectiveness, identify necessary program changes and develop proposals that address setting and implementing annual program goals
  • Participate in the compilation of internal and external reports and statistical data and prepare project reports in accordance with Compass’ timelines and the donors’ guidelines

Knowledge Management/Knowledge Sharing

  • Champion organization-wide knowledge management and sharing, so that the organization's know-how, information and experience is shared inside the network and (as appropriate) outside the organization with families, partner organizations, funders, and stakeholders.
  • Promote collaborative tools to facilitate sharing of ideas and work among internal teams and external partners.
  • Help disseminate information about the organization's program to internal and external audiences
  • Communicate with other Liberated Learners centres to improve best practices and seek guidance on new project ideas.

Communications

  • Ability to get consensus and collaboration across many partners; ability to explain complex concepts in layman's language; ability to generate enthusiasm; ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals.   
  • Experience in establishing straightforward, productive relationships; treating all individuals with fairness and respect, demonstrating sensitivity for cultural and gender differences; showing great drive and commitment to the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with all levels of employees in various organizations to explain procedures and guidelines and/or obtain and relay information

  • Collaborates with others in organization and across functional units;
  • Acknowledges others' contributions; works effectively with individuals of different cultures and genders; is willing to seek help as needed

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrates skill in project management techniques, including organization/time management and strategic planning and execution of plans to achieve results
  • Knowledge of current web/online knowledge sharing software and tools, metrics
    • Google Apps, essential (Drive, Analytics, etc.)
    • Wordpress
  • Good presentation skills (workshops, presentations, focus groups)
  • Proven knowledge and experience in program/project administration and event planning, with strong planning, priority setting, leadership, presentation and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to work in a diverse, multifaceted environment, while balancing and maintaining deadlines and responsibilities

Adaptability/Flexibility/Initiative

  • Responds appropriately and confidently to demands/challenges when confronted with changes, ambiguity, adversity, or other pressures; gathering broad and balanced input, drawing sound conclusions and translating conclusions into timely decisions and actions

  • Keeps current in own field of expertise; models lifelong learning; assesses personal skills and abilities objectively; seeks out opportunities for self-management, development and continuous learning and sees applicability of current or emerging trends, tools, methods and/or technologies to the future needs of the organization
