The YMCA of Northern Alberta has the following part time (28 hours per week), term contract position available until December 31st 2018 (with the possibility of extension):


Director – Young Adult Strategy

The YMCA of Northern Alberta is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work alongside the Young Adult Engagement and Leadership Strategy Steering Committee to provide effective development, implementation and management  of the Young Adult Engagement and Leadership Strategy for the YMCA of Northern Alberta. The Director manages an approved budget, and creates, implements, monitors, and evaluates programming. The Director carries out his or her duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of conduct and practice, health and safety standards, and contractual, legal and regulatory requirements. The Director works closely with and builds partnerships with assigned funders and partners, and stakeholders.


The successful candidate will represent the YMCA of Northern Alberta with peers in the Edmonton human services, community services environment, foster relationships with internal stakeholders as well as other relevant service providers and service delivery partners and support the integration and alignment of the staff and services with the vision and mission of the YMCA of Northern Alberta.


A willingness to work a flexible schedule is required as shifts may vary and will include evenings and weekends. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Build an effective Young Adult Leadership Council: Recruit, hire, train, coach, supervise and manage all members of the council.
  • Provide leadership to program service delivery and development to meet the needs of program participants and the community
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and partners to ensure effective program development and delivery
  • Manage and evaluate programs against defined financial and programmatic outcomes, goals and objectives.
  • Recommend quality improvements and best practice strategies to current programs, processes, strategies, tools and ensure implementation of approved changes.
  • Develop, manage and monitor approved budgets and program financial operations to meet contractual obligations and financial targets and to achieve effective and efficient operations.
  • Represent the YMCA with key program stakeholders, community agencies, educational and business stakeholders to identify needs, manage referrals, coordinate solutions and integrate programs and services.
  • Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values and the YMCA programs and services.



Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

  • University Degree in a Human Services or equivalent
  • Annual registration in a professional organization as required by law if applicable.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C, & Police Security Clearance with vulnerable sector check
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Certification preferred.


  • 3-5 years directly related professional experience in program delivery and program management and administration particularly with youth and young adults.
  • 3–5 years staff and volunteer supervision.
  • 3-5 years of direct professional experience in a team environment
  • Experience with reporting and proposal writing.
  • Experience in community collaboration and partnerships.
  • Experience and knowledge of cultural and minority groups, special or high needs populations and other marginalized persons.
  • Experience working with persons facing barriers that may include mental health, addictions and low income.


  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and team skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of program development, planning and promotion, outcome evaluation, budgeting and financial management, and marketing and public relations.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in group work and group facilitation.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in best practices utilized by the YMCA including Executive Coaching, Healthy Child and Adolescent Development, and motivational interviewing.
  • Knowledge of related community, education, youth and human services resources.
  • Sensitive to and demonstrated knowledge of dealing with the needs of participants from different cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Competencies consistent with the YMCA Competencies Document at Senior-Level.
  • Competent Computer skills: Microsoft Office (Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Outlook).
