Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO) is seeking a Research Assistant to help develop online tools for family law. This role will support CLEO’s work to develop online guided pathways to public legal information that helps Ontarians address their family law problems. The guided pathways tailor public legal information, helping users to identify needs, find information about their situation, access live help, and navigate court house processes.


The Research Assistant will work closely with a small project team of lawyers, content analysts, IT developers and plain language editors to collect and compile local information about legal assistance and court processes for family law. The Research Assistant will telephone, attend at courthouses throughout Ontario or otherwise collect information about the process and user experiences connected with family law court processes. In addition, the Research Assistant will compile information about services available to people with family law problems. This information will be organized, summarized, and catalogued, before being entered it into a database.


This is a 3 month, temporary, fixed-term contract position starting January 1, 2018 and concluding on March 31, 2018. The Research Assistant will be paid a monthly salary of $4,000. The successful candidate will be required to work both as part of a small team and independently.


The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent writing and editing, attention to detail, proficiency in drafting content to a style guide. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of family law, legal training and experiences involving the collection of information by way of telephone interview. Experience researching and working with a database application will be considered an asset. This position requires some post-secondary education.



  • Identify online sources of information on legal assistance for family law in Ontario by court district.
  • Research family court and form processes for Ontario.
  • Assist in the development of a style guide for drafting public legal information embedded in an online guided pathway.
  • Contact or attend at courthouses to collect information on the local process for taking steps in a family law proceeding.
  • Compile and catalogue collected information into research reports, following the style guide.
  • Enter catalogued information from research reports into the project database system.
  • Test guided pathways (A2J Guided Interviews) to ensure information is presenting correctly.
