Location: Sudbury Salary: $36,400.00 per annum

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses

Hire, orientate, train, evaluate and discipline in concert with Territorial/National standards

Manage health/safety and other related issues at a store level

Supervise as well as participate in sorting and tagging merchandise, unloading donations, stocking shelves and performing cash transactions

Plan store layout to attract customers, including window displays and merchandise displays, decide on in-store promotions and auctions.

Maintain a high level of customer service and create an attractive atmosphere for customers

Determine and maintain appropriate stock levels based on spot checks of the store.

Maintain control of inventory by ensuring that all merchandise is priced appropriately; control inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring. 

Maintain efficient and timely disposal of unsellable merchandise.

Determine and submit requests regarding in-store operational needs and supplies as necessary.   

Complete all financial/operational paperwork and submit same to Ministry Unit Office in a timely manner, and in accordance with organization standards

Ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the store is up to standard policy – including practicing “Tidy Maintenance.”

Ensure in-store safety of volunteers and customers, i.e. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, clean spillage; ensure that the property (store) is secured at all times

Participate in store budget preparations; including setting yearly/monthly sales targets, projecting staffing requirements, in store presentation needs etc.

Ensure that banking is completed as per store policy into the appropriate financial institution.

Review store financial statements with the Community Ministries Coordinator; strategize appropriate action to attain financial goals, monitor cost of goods and store supplies.

Conduct appropriate ongoing staff and volunteer training for all aspects of merchandise handling including receiving, sorting, stocking and check out – as well as all aspects of customer service. 

Communicate regularly with the Thrift Store Supervisor to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and to provide encouragement and support as needed.

Attend regular Ministry Unit Management Meetings and provide up-to-date reports on store business activities etc. 

Prepare employee/volunteer work schedules, submit time sheets and plan coverage for vacation/sick days.

Perform other position related duties as required

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a College Diploma in Business/Retail Management or equivalent 

Basic accounting experience is required.

Minimum of three (3) years of prior related retail store management experience, specifically in second hand merchandise preferred and supervisory experience.

Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e. bank deposits, summary reports, etc.

Self-motivated and disciplined

Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes

Strong operations experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management and office management

Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication, leadership and organisational skills

Ability to lift/move 40 lbs. (18.14 kgs)

Must have strong skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL)

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.

Ability to communicate in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques in both one-on-one and group settings.

Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Ability to positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.

Ability to assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions, which are timely, and in the best interests of the organization.

Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance, provision of an original copy of current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion

Provision of an original copy of a Background Check screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment

May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

This is a permanent full time position.  Flexibility in scheduling is required. Typical Thrift Store hours of operation are Monday – Saturday 8:30am – 5:00pm and Thursday extended to 7:00pm.  Shifts may include days, afternoons, evening, weekend shifts and split shifts, Monday through Saturday, flexibility in scheduling is required

 

 

This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods, and overtime compensation.  Salary is based on average minimum weekly hours of 40 per week and hours worked are compensated through the salary amount.
