We have an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, compassionate Veterinarian to take on the role of Veterinarian-in-Charge at our busy full service facility located in Vancouver. 


Reporting to the Senior Manager of Business Development, this position is accountable for a companion animal practice, supported by the BC SPCA’s strong operational, finance and human resource teams. This position will ensure the maintenance of the highest standards of general companion animal veterinary practices.


While maintaining an active caseload, the Veterinarian-in-Charge is responsible for providing leadership for the hospital, managing associate veterinarians and assuring regulatory compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine. In partnership with the Hospital Administrator, the Veterinarian-in-Charge is responsible for the financial performance of the hospital, preparing operating and capital budgets, and meeting budget expectations.  This position carries the role of “Designate Member” and ensures the maintenance of the highest standards of companion animal veterinary medicine. Veterinarian-in-Charge is accountable for maintaining the Hospital’s image as being compassionate, caring and concerned with the welfare of each and every individual animal and their guardian.


As our ideal candidate, you have:  

  • Registered as a licensed practitioner in good standing with the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia
  • Current knowledge of veterinary medicine and surgery
  • At least five (5) years veterinary practice experience
  • An academic degree in or demonstrated business management skills
  • Strong appreciation for animal welfare
  • Excellent oral, written and non-verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable in addressing media and public
  • Strong leadership skills combined with positive team player attitude to enable our team flourish
  • High level of energy, stamina and flexibility in adapting to changing situations
  • This position may require occasional travel within the province
  • Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit organization considered an asset
