Bissell Centre is growing and in need of a passionate and skilled Child Care Coordinator. Having been selected as an Early Learning Child Care Centre (ELCC), the individual in this position will be working with a multi-disciplinary team to prepare for a move into a new and expanded program space, while implementing ELCC requirements. Our Early Childhood Development Centre is a fully licensed and accredited child care facility that accepts children between 0-5 years old and is available to parents and guardians, with low income, at no cost.


Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Ensures and facilitates the smooth functioning of all aspects of the centre in order to best serve children and families
  • Demonstrated understanding of Child Care Licensing Act
  • Provides supervision, leadership and support to all ECDC program staff
  • Facilitates the recruitment and coordinates the selection, hiring and orientation of all new staff to the department, within agency approved processes and polices
  • Maintains operation of the department within the approved budget, in consultation with the Director of Community Programs & Services
  • Develops partnerships and networks within the community (social services, Child & Family Services, other daycare centres, community based family resources, etc) to facilitate appropriate referrals and intakes into the programs
  • Consults, supports and provides guidance to child care staff in developing and evaluating children’s programming as required
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships and regular communication with parent-clients
  • Facilitates or directly provides mediation and resolution to parent-program conflicts as they arise
  • Ensures appropriate professional development opportunities are made available to department staff within agency and department budget parameters; and in accordance with identified training needs of staff in the department
  • Facilitates the placement, orientation and evaluation of Early Childhood Education practicum student placements, within the department
  • Ensures ongoing requirements for licensing and accreditation are maintained
  • Oversees the maintenance of accurate records, case notes, files, and documentation to track outcomes
  • Represents the agency by participation on committees in the child care community
  • Ensures a family centered approach is maintained and families are connected with necessary referrals (internal/external) by program staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director



The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:  

  • Child Care Supervisor (Level 3) or Provincially recognized equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with demonstrated child care centre management and supervisory experience.
  • Valid Standard 1st Aid, Level C
  • Strong knowledge of relevant licensing and accreditation
  • Understanding of how to identify and support various special needs observed in children
  • Clear and thorough understanding of Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act
  • Knowledge and understanding about the various services offered within Bissell Centre and how ECDC fits into agency business plan
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop and manage program annual budgets
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures, history and current issues
