Job Purpose:

Kahkiyaw is being delivered in partnership by Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and Boyle Street Community Services, two community organizations with a long and successful history of serving Aboriginal people in Edmonton.  Working closely with CFSA Region 6 and using the Outcome Based Service Delivery model, the program will provide a continuum of services to improve the outcomes for Aboriginal children and families in our city.

 

This position will work in collaboration with Kahkiyaw’s Family Wellness supervisors & Child and Family Services Region 6 caseworkers. The Family Wellness Youth Specialist will assist Youth in stabilizing their lives and increasing opportunities for success.  The Family Wellness Youth Specialist works from a harm reduction approach, a relationship based practice and a strength based philosophy.  The Family Wellness Youth Specialist is responsible for case management along with our CFSA Region 6 partner and will work within the parameters of the High Risk Youth Initiative in helping participants.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with CFSA workers and participants on intervention strategies to help youth pursue safer and healthier lives.
  • Establish relationship-based practice with participants and to build rapport with caseworkers, family members & other supports.
  • Work from a strengths perspective with all participants.
  • Assist in creating a safe, secure and supportive environment which respects the participant and his/her right to participate in all decisions affecting them.
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety planning.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to community services.
  • Advocate and ensure basic needs of participant are being met.
  • Respect and meet the various cultural needs of the participant.
  • Provide guidance and support and make referrals for participant on issues related to health, family, addictions, justice, education, employment, recreation and housing.
  • Establish working relationships with Boyle Street Community Services staff, the High Risk Youth Initiative and various NCCYF staff.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Diploma or Degree in Human Services; minimum of two years of relevant related experience. Must have knowledge and experience working with high risk youth and families.

Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the High Risk Youth Initiative philosophy, including harm reduction and relationship based practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of addictions, gangs, sexual exploitation, homelessness, poverty, use and neglect.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal Culture.
  • Exhibits and exceptional ability in connecting with youth and understands barriers encountered by youth.
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act.
  • Demonstrate effective time management skills, strong professional boundaries and quick and efficient problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer and report writing skills, including Microsoft Office and experience working with a data base e.g. (ETO- Efforts Towards Outcomes).
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Extensive travel and transportation of clients is a necessity and have a reliable vehicle.
  • Hours will be vary each week; will be after hours responsibilities.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Aboriginal peoples, new immigrants, ethno-cultural groups and vulnerable populations.
  • Level 1 First-Aid, Applied Suicide Intervention and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certified.
  • Criminal Record check and Child and Youth Information Systems check are required.
  • Valid Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle, and a Driver’s Abstract
