Job Summary


Under the direction of the Shelter Supervisors, Animal Care Workers (ACWs) provide animals in Society care with professional, conscientious, compassionate care, meeting physical and behavioural needs including ensuring constant cleanliness of cages/runs and shelter areas and the proper feeding and care of all shelter animals.


Job Duties

  • Complete daily cleaning and disinfecting routines of animal housing areas and equipment used (e.g. food bowls, cat litter pans, carrying cages, etc.) in a timely fashion, maintaining assigned area in a clean, organized and professional manner while following all infection control protocols
  • May require use of mechanical cleaning tools e.g. industrial floor scrubber
  • Daily feeding of animals housed within the shelter, maintaining supply of fresh water and appropriate food
  • Perform daily evaluations of shelter animals, monitoring their health; notifying supervisors of any health problems or concerns regarding animals; follow established protocols if symptoms of illness arise; documenting/charting as appropriate
  • Provide animal enrichment including exercise, training, and socialization of animals as time permits
  • General bathing and grooming of animals as required
  • Laundry duties as required
  • Collection/moving/distribution of supplies (e.g. food, litter, etc.), donations, trash, and recycling
  • Transportation of animals through use of Society vehicles – to appointments, picking up/dropping off transfers of animals (may include travel outside of Canada)
  • Work in compliance with all Society policy, procedures and protocols including the Health & Safety Manual and related protocols
  • Immediately report all incidents of injury, property damage, absence of or failure of a protective device and/or equipment to a supervisor
  • Demonstrate cooperation with other departments in order to ensure efficiency of care and support for animals
  • Ensure that any building and maintenance related issues are reported a Supervisor
  • Attend and participate in on-line training, workshops, seminars, and in-service training as assigned
  • Other duties as required in the day to day operation of the Society

Job Qualifications

  • Experience working with animals, preferably in a shelter, kennel, vet clinic or volunteer environment
  • Formal animal care knowledge, training and/or experience an asset
  • Must have genuine compassion for animals
  • Knowledge of disease transmission an asset
  • Must be comfortable working with and handling animals
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team in a diverse environment
  • Must have good organizational skills and time management skills
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Must possess high levels of integrity and work ethic
  • Demonstrated moderate level computers skills

Work Conditions

  • Flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Working in a busy environment with frequent interruptions
  • Occasional overtime
  • May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy to moderately heavy objects and materials and some combination of climbing and balancing to include stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
