 The Women’s Emergency Accommodation Centre (WEAC) provides emergency beds, meals, transportation and security for women in a 24-hour-a-day staffed facility.

 

The Care Worker is a front line staff member of the WEAC team responsible for the delivery of service to program residents. A large part of the Care Worker’s role is to insure the basic needs of the residents are being met with dignity and respect. The Care Worker provides a variety of different supports to our clients from medical administration to keeping the centre clean.

 

Hours: Varied hours depending on program needs; must be able to work flexible schedule – shifts can be          day time, evening, over nights and/or weekends.

In Your Role You Will

  • Supervise residents to maintain a safe and secure environment for all women in need.
  • Provide direct care to clients by responding to requests for service, crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Facilitate intake of new clients
  • Model appropriate living and interaction skills.
  • Complete regular cleaning duties within the shelter.
  • Contribute to a team that is constantly working towards quality programming.
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding program information.
  • Navigate crisis and or violent situations.
  • Participate in client care on an as needed basis.
  • Provides additional support to the program when required.

 Education and Certifications

Required

  • Some post-secondary training in a human service field or 6 months related work experience.
  • Required Certification:
    • Police Information Check
    • Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Training
    • Standard First Aid/CPR
    • Crisis and Suicide Intervention
    • Medication Administration
    • De-escalation training is an asset

Experience

  • Broad knowledge of community resources, knowledge of inner city, homelessness, poverty, mental health, additions, prostitution, abuse and multicultural issues.
  • Knowledge of harm-reduction practices and trauma informed care.
  • Non –judgmental, empathetic, creative and enthusiastic qualities.
  • Clear understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Ability to adhere to and implement the objectives and guiding principles of the Social Work Code of Ethics.
  • Aptitude and skill in computer use.
  • Previous experience within the Inner City is an asset.

Competencies

  • Capacity to prioritize and organize with the ability to be a creative problem solver.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work with initiative and independence.
  • Clear understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Ability to adhere to and implement the objectives and guiding principles of the WEAC guidelines for ethical practice.
  • Non –judgmental, empathetic, creative and enthusiastic qualities.
