We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced team player to fill the term contract position of Communications Manager. Reporting to the Director, Marketing & Communications, the Communications Manager will act as the lead on all publicity, and both internal and external communications initiatives, for Arts Commons, Arts Commons Presents (BD&P World Music, TD Jazz, PCL Blues, National Geographic Live, Visual and Media Arts, Public/Free Events), and the Calgary International Children’s Festival (CICF).

 

Key areas of responsibility include:

  1. Media Relations
  • Proactively manage and develop relationships with media locally, regionally, and nationally, in order to raise the profile of Arts Commons and CICF, including the writing and distribution of all press materials and follow up, pitches to specific media outlets and journalists, scheduling and facilitating interviews with key executive team members, and accompanying media while on site
  • Seek out, categorize, and archive all media articles, both in print and online
  • Prepare and present monthly reports on media and publicity results, online publications, and traditional media (print, radio, television), with a plan of action for continual optimization and improvement
  1. External Communications
  • Develop, produce and/or manage the writing, production, and stakeholder approvals of a wide range of high quality digital and print and communications products, including:
    • Press releases
    • Communications plans
    • Marketing collateral
    • Campaign key messaging
    • eCommunication content (including Spotlight eNewsletter)
    • Speaking notes
    • Customer service scripts
    • Radio and television scripts
    • Reports and presentations
  • Community Outreach / Niche Market Development in order to sell tickets and raise awareness of Arts Commons programming and position in the community
  • Edit official Arts Commons materials produced by other departments to ensure accuracy, good communication flow, and on-brand messaging
  1. Internal Communications
  • Develop, execute, implement, and maintain an annual Communications Strategy, Plan and Budget, achieving priorities as set out in Arts Commons’ Strategic Plan
  • Develop and manage cross-promotional initiatives with resident companies and fellow consortium members
  • Act as primary contact with Resident Companies, proactively communicating with them about Arts Commons activities that effect and assist them, building and strengthening the relationship
  • Communicate building and staff news, new policies and procedures to Arts Commons staff, and at times (when deemed appropriate) to resident companies and/or consortium members
  • Work with security and facilities to manage crises and communicate pertinent information to staff, resident companies, and other building tenants in a timely manner
  • Provide operational communications services and advice to staff
  • Organize media training and briefings for Arts Commons’ executives, as required
  1. Magazine Managing Editor
  • Act as lead writer and Managing Editor for our magazine (print and online), responsible for directing content development, fact checking, writing/assigning articles and editing content, overseeing production and distribution channels, and gauging reader engagement
  • Manage magazine distribution, both internally and externally
  • Develop and implement innovative ways of enhancing and integrating our magazine with online initiatives to grow audience interaction
  • Responsible for the collection of relevant content for resident companies who do not sell tickets through our box office, for placement on our website and in our magazine listings
  1. Other
  • Budget planning, development, and management, including recording of estimates vs. actuals, creation of POs, reconciling of invoices, month-end reporting, forecasting, etc.
  • Attendance at Arts Commons Presents and CICF concerts, shows, and festivals, as media representative or representative at the marketing table, developing our audience and communicating our offering
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Applicants should have a degree or diploma in communications, journalism, or a related field and minimum 5 years’ experience in media relations or as a journalist. Other desired skills and qualifications include:

  • Excellent writing skills for both long copy/journalistic writing and for short copy/marketing writing
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other team members
  • Ability to apply current trends in media relations, writing/editing, public relations, issues and crisis management, product development, advertising and promotion
  • Ability to analyze outcomes of communications efforts
  • Strong project management skills and experience managing multiple resources and deadlines
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook & Powerpoint)
  • A passion for the arts!

 

This position has a 40-hour work-week, with occasional evening and weekend work required. A competitive compensation package, including extended health benefits, is offered.

 

This is a term contract for 13 months, beginning February 5, 2018.
