Student Counsellor/Job Developer with Hope Action Values Ethics Culinary Training Society

Hope Action Values Ethics (HAVE) Culinary Training Society seeks a full time Counsellor/Job Developer. HAVE provides culinary training to individuals with barriers to employment, such as mental health and addictions. HAVE's Counsellor/Job Developer works with each student to create a case plan for employment and any additional supports they may require. This role is suitable for entry level candidates, but experience is an asset, particularly working with the population we serve.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for Student Intakes and Exits which involves filling out student intake questionnaires, keeping accurate records of students start and end dates and confidential information and create a case plan for each student.

  • Providing supports to students such as helping them to apply for BCID, Birth Certificates, SIN numbers ect. Helping to find shelter space and transitional housing, treatment programs, connecting them with mental health resources and other no or low cost resources.

  • Making yourself available to listen to students needs and to counsel them appropriately on a daily basis.

  • Work with Correctional Services Canada clients and their respective parole officers and counsellors in helping recent parolees to achieve a successful transition back into society and find employment.

  • Coach students in soft skills, resume writing, interview skills and communication skills.

  • Actively pursue potential employers through cold calling, Jobs Canada and WorkBC websites in order to procure employment for students. Arrange meetings with potential employers to tell them about who we are and what we do.

  • Deliver presentations to community organizations, mental health centres, and other organizations whose clients could benefit from the HAVE program.

  • Deliver presentations to visiting groups and organizations who come to our Cafe to learn more about us.

  • Interact with WorkBC Case Managers who refer clients to us.

  • Build relationships with employers and monitor student progress once they have been placed with an employer.

  • Work with Executive Director and other staff on grant writing to secure funding..

  • Write letters of thanks and acknowledgment to funders and others who provide services in-kind.

  • Write press releases, contribute to social media (Facebook, Twitter) letters of reference for students.

  • Write progress reports for Executive Director and Board of Directors.

  • Reply to email inquiries regarding the program.

  • Work closely with Executive Director and Board of Directors regarding all aspects of the program.

  • Make catering deliveries as requested (vehicle provided).



  • Applicant must have experience working with high impact individuals with multiple barriers.

  • Counselling certificate an asset but proven experience is also acceptable.

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector an asset.

  • Grant writing experience.

  • Job development skills.

  • Good written and verbal communications skills are a must.

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to learn how to use software to manage contacts and student profiles.

  • Ability to handle stress a must.

  • Must have good organizational skills, be creative and able to work with little supervision.

  • Valid Driver's Licence.
