About This Staff Role


HTS has an exciting opportunity for a Controller to join our team.


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will direct and manage the accounting functions for HTS, including establishing and maintaining accounting practices and procedures, preparing budgets and forecasts, and preparing financial statements.


We are inviting candidates with the following qualifications to apply:



  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with a high attention to detail;
  • Willingness to be innovative and create efficiencies in current processes and procedures;
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to excellence in internal client service;
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills;
  • Great analytical, organizational and people skills.



  • University degree in Accounting, Business or Finance supported by a professional accounting designation (preferably CPA).


Working Experience:

  • 5+ years progressive finance / accounting experience;
  • 2-3 years of supervisory/management experience;
  • Financial management and accounting principles, practices and methodologies, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and modern controllership; in order to establish, maintain and follow accounting practices and controls, and to ensure the integrity of financial management for the school;
  • Solid knowledge of accounting and financial management requirements for the not-for-profit sector and particularly related to independent schools;
  • All relevant federal and provincial legislation to ensure compliance (e.g. Income Tax Act, pension legislation, FIPPA);
  • Principles of financial analysis, to conduct regular reviews of financial data, identify areas of risk, and recommend solution options;
  • Financial audit principles and techniques, in order to prepare all necessary documentation to support external audits, and to conduct internal audits as necessary;
  • Business planning and budgeting processes, to oversee the development of the operating and capital budgets.
