About Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership:

The SNAP program is a unique partnership involving three local non-profit groups and Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture. SNAP is administered by the Green Timbers Heritage Society (GTHS), a non-profit partner in SNAP with a long history of advocating on behalf of Surrey’s urban forest. SNAP is a youth-focused program that works collaboratively with our partners to restore and enhance our urban forest while promoting environmental stewardship across our City. Our four principal objectives are to: 1) restore and enhance Surrey’s natural areas and wildlife habitat; 2) raise awareness of the benefits of nature, and the importance of Surrey’s urban forest; 3) foster participation in nature while promoting the stewardship of Surrey parks; and 4) empower youth to become future leaders in environmental education and conservation.

Position Description:

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Habitat Restoration Team Leader for the SNAP summer program. The Habitat Restoration Team Leaders will lead a team of Habitat Restoration Team Members and volunteers, and will work under the direction of the SNAP Program Coordinator to implement restoration prescriptions in Surrey parks. This is a field based position. Through this program, the successful applicants will receive training and experience in environmental restoration and habitat enhancement techniques.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team in the implementation of restoration prescriptions (e.g. removal of invasive plant species, park clean-ups, small wildlife projects, trail closures, planting maintenance);
  • Assist with the training, supervision, and evaluation of team members and volunteers;
  • Maintain files and track project deliverables, providing updates & progress reports to supervisors;
  • Ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Collect data, maintain accurate daily records and write a final report;
  • Communicate with the public as an ambassador for our partner organizations;
  • Occasionally assist other SNAP teams with staffing environmental displays at special events, leading community stewardship events, and other educational outreach activities;
  • Other related duties as required.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in an outdoor work environment involving intense physical labour, a working knowledge of local plant communities (including identification of native and invasive plants), and experience in a paid supervisory role with peers. You are thorough and hard-working, understand what leadership means, and contribute to a positive and professional team environment. You are organized, motivated, can think strategically and understand the broader needs of our organization. Applicants will be reviewed based on their presentation of abilities in the following core competency areas:

Core Competencies:

  • Passion for the Environment: Your own values are strongly aligned with ours and you possess a working knowledge of basic ecological principles;
  • Experience: You have demonstrated experience working in an outdoor setting, are comfortable working in a physically intense job in all weather conditions;
  • Leadership & Supervision: You have proven experience leading or supervising a group of peers. You lead by example and foster a positive and productive team environment. You are committed to ensuring the safety and quality of your work, and the professional development of your crew;
  • Professionalism &  Teamwork:  You  set  an  example  to  your  team members,  contributing  to  a professional work environment, and fostering a positive and collaborative team-based approach to completing all work projects;
  • Time Management & Organization: You are well organized and adept at handling multiple priorities and large amounts of data, and can keep track of progress on multiple projects. You are detail- oriented and have experience in report writing;
  • Problem Solving & Adaptability: you think creatively, react positively to challenging and constantly changing circumstances and adapt accordingly.

Required Qualifications:

Eligible applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree or two year diploma program in Forestry, Biology, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or related discipline;
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience;
  • Demonstrated experience, willingness, and/or ability to perform repetitive, physical work in all weather conditions;
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30lbs
  • Demonstrated ability to identify native and invasive plants, and knowledge of ecological principles;
  • Strong public relations and interpersonal skills;
  • Must have steel toed boots;
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and be willing to submit a driver’s abstract;
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification;
  • Completion of a criminal record check will be required as a condition of employment.

This position is partially funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must also satisfy the following Government of Canada stipulations in order to be eligible:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada and BC.
