Duration:              Full-time May 28 – August 27, 2018

                              Part-time may be available from May 8, 2018 (Outdoor Education)

Hours:                  40 hours/week, Monday-Friday

                             Training hours may vary

Wage:                   $12.50+/hr (Dependent on qualifications)

Situation

The YMCA of Northern BC serves 20,000 people of all abilities, backgrounds, and stages of life in Northern British Columbia.  We are a growing, multi-service association that offers health, fitness and recreation, licensed childcare, rehabilitation services, community support services, and summer camp.

Nature and Scope

Kanannaq [~can-a-nak~] is Inuit for North Wind. This unique, lakeside day camp provides every child the opportunity to actively participate and benefit from outdoor activities while sleeping in the comfort of their own beds each night. Camp Kanannaq believes that camp is an experience that all children are entitled to; therefore, Camp Kanannaq emphasizes enjoyment, exploration, originality and inspiration within a secure and accommodating environment. It is a childhood haven where campers discover nature and are physically active, acquire new skills, develop self-confidence and build permanent friendships.

 

The Program Supervisor will assist the Coordinator with the running of YMCA Solaris and Polaris programs for Camp Kanannaq, including but not restricted to, promotion and registration initiatives, maintaining facilities, equipment, programs and written reports, programming; staff management, training, meetings and support including feedback for evaluations, and assuring YMCA standards and procedures are taking place. They are responsible for modelling ideal Counsellor qualities, behaviour, interactions and work ethic at all times. The Program Supervisor is a role model and leader within the camp team who is passionate about two things: making a difference in the lives of others and teaching respect and enjoyment of the outdoors. They are fun, enthusiastic and energetic; are thoughtful, compassionate and excellent listeners; are co-operative, flexible members of the staff team; and finally, this person is creative, capable, mature, and selfless. Our team is required to work together to devotedly supervise and facilitate campers and daily programs, both small group and camp-wide, while following YMCA policies and procedures and integrating the YMCA Core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, Inclusivity and Responsibility. 

 

Major Responsibilities                 

The Program Supervisor is responsible for assuring all camp programming is planned, facilitated and followed by working with counsellors. They must understand the importance of safety and must demonstrate so though responsible leadership, by exhibiting model character at all times, as they share their love for the outdoors in delivering and furthering the success of Camp Kanannaq Programs, meeting and exceeding all targets and timelines – Program Supervisors are ultimate role models for both campers and fellow staff.

  • Develop, train, facilitate, and oversee all programming.
  • Act as a program resource for staff and provide leadership and direction where appropriate.
  • Assist in camp fundraisers and promotion.
  • Responsible for delivery, management and operation of all program related needs, schedules, staffing and supplies.
  • Be in accordance with all BCCA and YMCA standards, policies and procedures, and to develop and deliver a variety of age-appropriate activities that have a high impact, are enriching, and integrate YMCA Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, Inclusivity and Responsibility.
  • Demonstrate by example and communicate effectively to enforce safety regulations to all ages and skill levels and to assist campers or staff when applicable.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and respond to hazards, always minimizing risk.
  • Interact directly with children while guiding and redirecting in situations when conflicts arise.
  • Establish and maintain positive daily communication with all parents/guardians.
  • Ensure physical and emotional needs of children are met and manage behaviours according to procedure.
  • Interact directly with the children offering a balance of child guided and counsellor directed activities.
  • Assist with the planning and implementing of a consistent child centered program in accordance with YMCA standards, both small group and camp-wide.
  • Maintain a safe, neat, orderly and clean environment of all activity areas and washrooms and that they meet standards according to requirements.
  • Demonstrate and role model appropriate behaviour at all times
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information.
  • Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately prepared for all activities.
  • Attend all staff trainings and regular program development meetings as required.
  • Share passion for camp and the outdoors, integrating and promoting healthy child development.
  • Contribute flexibly as a team member to achieve goals, specifically to ensure that Camp Kanannaq is a memorable experience for all campers – ensure that Camp Kanannaq makes this their best summer yet!

Skills and Knowledge

  • Working with groups of children with the ability to engage and motivate children to participate in outdoor recreation activities
  • Able to manage and facilitate large groups of children
  • Able to motivate, share, and coach staff
  • Strong self-starter
  • Able to work independently
  • Strong creativity and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with a variety of children
  • Experience working with children 6-12
  • Experience working with special needs children is an asset

Qualifications

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”
  • Clear Criminal Record Check
  • Completion of all YMCA related training

Assets

  • Previous Camp Kanannaq Experience
  • Experience program planning and facilitating
  • Courses/Experience working with or caring for children in a child care/recreational setting
  • Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
  • BC Class 4 driver’s license (Preference will be given to those with Class 4)
  • Canoe or specialized water sport experience
  • Wilderness First Aid

  6. Initiative/Enthusiasm/Innovation Ability to manage and lead in order to achieve and exceed identified goals.
  7. Community Awareness and Understanding – Demonstrates and promotes a personal understanding of and appreciation for the vision, mission and values of the organization.
  8. Project Resource Management – Ability to manage a project from initial planning to completion.
  9. Strategic Planning/Visioning - Ability to visualize future direction and formulate strategies, plans and action to achieve vision.
