SENIOR PUBLIC INTEREST LAWYER

The British Columbia Public Interest Advocacy Centre (BCPIAC) is a not-for-profit, social justice law firm located in Vancouver. BCPIAC’s mission is to advance the interests of individuals and groups that are generally unrepresented or underrepresented in areas of major public concern.

BCPIAC is seeking a senior lawyer for a permanent position.

BCPIAC’s work focuses on anti-poverty and anti-oppression work, and energy regulation before British Columbia’s courts and tribunals. Our social justice work focuses on effecting systemic change through human rights and Ombudsperson complaints, judicial reviews, litigation, negotiation, and public education. Our regulatory work includes regular intervention before the BC Utilities Commission on electricity, natural gas and ICBC matters on behalf of low and fixed income residential ratepayers. The successful candidate will be required to practice in all areas of BCPIAC’s work. Please refer to our website for more details about our regulatory and anti-poverty/anti-oppression case work (www.bcpiac.com).

  • Membership in or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia;
  • A minimum of seven years’ litigation experience practicing administrative, human rights, constitutional, and/or regulatory law;
  • Experience mentoring junior lawyers;
  • Experience advocating with supportive community organizations on behalf of or working with individuals who experience poverty or other forms of marginalization; and
  • Knowledge of and commitment to principles of anti-oppression.

       Fluency in language(s) other than English is an asset.

Applications should include a resume as well as a cover letter outlining any relevant work or life experience that relate to BCPIAC’s work. A writing sample and/or litigation resume, and references will be requested when interviews are scheduled.

BCPIAC is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from all qualified applicants. We encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented groups including Indigenous people, people of colour, people with disabilities, people with lived experience of poverty, and queer and trans people.

Salary will be commensurate with legal experience. BCPIAC provides a full benefits package, along with vacation and discretionary time to promote a healthy work/life balance.
